Lambeth attempts to cancel Cannabis Festival

I suppose you could write back and say:

1. Can you tell me how many complaints were received?
2. Can you tell me why these were never raised with the organisers?

nope, not at all. And I spoke to OB policing the festival towards the end of the day, and they were pretty happy with the way things had gone.

I'm now no. 132!!

I notice that Eddie Ellison , former head of the Metropolitan Police Drug Squad and now a pro-legalisation campaigner (and occasional Urban contributor) has signed it :)
I'm 42, if only that were so it would be very cool.

I suppose this means that todays an 'occasion'. Happy occasion everyone!

Dealing with the Dealers & Benefit

We have another meeting with Lambeth Sports & Recreation on Monday 21st March to go over the reasons for refusing us the use of park.

We will be putting forward our revised plans of how to Deal with Dealers having consulted with Select Security and the Police.

For the record there were 4 public complaints last year, over sound levels, none about dealing. There were also 3 enquires from Councillors over how many compliants.
It should also be noted that last year there were only 4 objections to our licence applications ( 1 each from Cllr C & J Whelan ) and this year only 3 (1 each from Cllr C & J Whelan the other from Cllr Kimm, all Tory cllrs from Thurlow Park ward on the sourther edge of the park).
Unfortunately there is no mechanism for people to say how much they agree and enjoy an event.
Signing the pettition via the www.thecannabisfestival.co.uk website might help.

March / festi Benefit at Jamm (Bar Lorca) on Sat 8th April, with SQUALL, UNsound, BASS, Markie RDK, Negusa Negast, £5 all night

Just to help people compare these facts with the initial Lambeth statement:
While Lambeth Council supports freedom of speech and the right to take part
in a legitimate campaign, the council cannot condone illegal activities
such as cannabis use and drug pushing - both of which have taken place at a
previous festival held by the Cannabis Coalition. Indeed council officers
monitoring the event in the past were approached by drug dealers who
offered them drugs.

Brockwell Park is one of our best-used and well-loved parks and is popular
with families. When the festival has taken place before we have received
numerous complaints from local people who have been harassed by drug
dealers and we have received many reports of people taking drugs.
These
issued have been raised with the event organisers. We do not feel confident
that the Cannabis Coalition will be able to prevent such incidents occuring
again.

We have a duty to ensure that any event taking place in the borough is not
being used to support illegal activity - which drug dealing and drug use
clearly is. Similarly we have a duty to do all we can to make sure that
residents can go about their daily lives safe in the knowledge that they
will not suffer undue harassment
. It is for these reasons that we have
refused the Cannabis Coalition permission to hold their event in Brockwell Park.

hmmn

off topic I know, but what was the date of the festie last year?

its sort of an anniversary type thing

That really is the biggest load of arse bollox this side of Penge. I mean if you take that logic fukin close the whole of brixton down, get some of that mean police tape and seal off the whole of the central market area until "residents can go about their daily lives" pussyclaart political bullshit

Lambeth are looking at some more detailed security/policing plans and should respond this week.

TeeJay I guess it's wiser not to sapeculate at this stage, but mine and many others' fingers are tightly crossed here ...

Good luck to all those trying to get this changed.

I hope Lambeth's response isn't issued at 5 pm this Thursday afternoon :(

Rollem ... if JayDay is cancelled or there's a march but no proper festie :( there's always Strawberry Fair up in Cambridge as an alternative, or hopefully additional! :)
