Lake district virgins - where to stay?

Advice wanted.

Thinking about a holiday in the lake district. Probably rent a cottage for a week. We just want to chill out, do a few walks, read a few books and hang out at the pub.

Couple of adults, no kids.

Problem - never been there before, and there are so many different lakes / villages. I think there are seven different Wainwright books FFS?

So which village is the best place to base ourselves?

Somewhere quiet and pretty I think, but with a pub.

Your thoughts please! :)

Eskdale, nice and quiet, the Boot Inn is good.

Keswick is fine if you want a few more amenities.

Avoid Windermere and Ambleside unless you have an old ladies in coaches thing.

ETA: I've under egged Eskdale, I love it there :)

Make sure the cottage has an open fire.

You're appreciate it after walking in the cold. Sitting, rosy cheeked clutching a glass of booze.

Bowness and Windermere are quite busy, which have been along with other places, a magnet for coach holidayers and Japanese tourists over the years. But it aint all that. As mentioned above Eskdale valley is very good, and I would also recommend Keswick, if just for the mountains and fells that surround it, and it's probably the wrong time of year, but it's good to hire a rowing boat with a friend and go out on somewhere like Derwent Water (near Keswick) or Coniston Water. :)
