Lake Como / Maggiore

We're planning a trip in June to Lake Como to celebrate the Mrs' 40th. We'll be there 2nd-6th June (Mon-Fri), and have already chosen Como over Garda.

Any recommendations for areas/places to stay or things to do?

We're willing to push the boat out (no pun intended) on hotels (don't want self catering/apartment) as it's a celebration. But the Mrs has a friend suggesting hotels in Bellagio for £000s per night and it's putting her off surely there must be nice but more affordable hotels in other nice areas around the Lake.

Edit OK we may also be considering Lake Maggiore!

Stayed a couple of nights in a cheap hotel on the outskirts of Como in the early 90s while doing touring theatre. Wish I could remember the name of the place because it was lovely. I wouldn't expect the cheap hotels there to be rubbish.
