The Lake District. Things to do off the beaten track?

I’m in Windermere today. It’s a bit shit isn’t it. Gentle rain on twee things. :(

Windermere or Bowness?

Bowness (the bit by the Lake) is pretty shit. The Angel is an “ok” pub (at best). There’s a few places along the pedestrian alley that look like they might be nice, but never tried them.

Up the hill in Windermere itself, it’s a bit nicer with a couple of ok cafes. And Booths.

Ambleside is better. Or Grasmere if you you just want to sit.

Get up Langdale though. Proper nice in all weather. Tonnes of good walks and two good pubs.

No car . Bowness. I’ll walk tomorrow from first light if I can figure out where I can get to from here without car. Maybe from Ambleside which is a boat away.. ?
Ok langdale sounds like a plan. Thank you folks.

Or Ullswater glenridding patterdale kirkstone. Less stunning than the western / southern fells. But still a lovely drive. (And close by).

Could also drive up to kentmere - there is literally no way out, but the valley is about as quiet / deserted / one way as it gets. And the working farm / ruined 14th century reiver protecting castle attached to the farmhouse (kentmere manor?) is well worth a squizz.

Walk over to kentmere

Edit: actually, that’s probably a shite idea in the rain. Lovely valley, some cracking fells, but I strongly suspect it’d be shite shite shite in zero visibility. (Was up there in similar conditions a few months back. It was a bit shite.)

Could attempt a loop around / near Grasmere - plenty of smaller fells in a wee bowl, none of them too distant from civilisation and warmth if it all goes to piss.

I really enjoyed Force Crag Mine last time I was there. Just outside Keswick, the path I took in was in a little village called Braithwaite. A long path and all of a sudden you come across this, what was one of the last working mines in The Lakes.

Nice walk from Grasmere to Langdale if the weather isn't miserable.

If it's raining a walk from skelwith bridge to chapel style to Lansdale is nice. You get a bit more tree cover if it's raining. Get a map and just follow a path :)

Ambleside to Lansdale over loughrigg is also nice.

And who called ambleside twee? Thats my town your dissing! ;)

Should be a direct bus to Ambleside, Grasmere and Keswick from Bowness (if not swap buses at Windermere. Change at Ambleside for Langdale (Dungeon Ghyll is where you want) they’re about hourly. Get a day rider ticket.

Boats are fun. If the weather is lousy sit downstairs in one of the big ones. Not cheap though. And the Ambleside stop is a way out from the town.

I'm not a National Trust member chilango , am happy to walk in drizzle but yeah, looks like tomorrow is supposed to be heavy rain. I'll head to Ambleside i think, its got a great name.

A whole day looking at goretex arrays = not the plan. Will have to figure it out in the morning .

You could do both Ambleside and Grasmere?

Or go to Keswick (there’s more there).

Or (and this is what I’d do) is ride the bus up to Dungeon Ghyll and sit by the fire in either the Old Dungeon Ghyll or the Stickle Barn. Popping out for a walk if the rain eases off.

In Grasmere, Baldry’s is (or was if the worrying rumours of yer man leaving are true) a lovely tea shop. Leaf tea in china cups and big hunks of cake.

Bus from Ambleside to Dungeon Ghyll goes '3 times per week' says the internet :D
(this trip is great motivation for the upcoming driving test. )

take the bus up to Keswick - firstly its a lovely route, mooch over to the lake and theatre, possibly take a boat out, maybe wander up the Castlerigg stone circle or walk along the route of the old rainway line towards Penrith, theres a good bus service on the A66 to get you back to Keswick.

Dog and Gun for dinner - food and beer is excellent. oh yeah, take a look around Needlesports. its the best gear shop in the Lakes.

not jealous at all. git...

...I like it here. Rain stopped and stone circle was lit up all golden for a minute...

glad you enjoyed summer.

Sent from the corner at Dog and Gun :)

its possible that someone i don't know, and wouldn't recognise in the mirror, got so drunk during a climbing club trip more than 20 years ago that he may have pissed himself in a corner of the Dog & Gun.

sorry.

Frosty bright sunny day fog on the lakes. This is one of those rare places that make me feel like a young person, everyone else being properly old.

I spent last NYE up in Priests hole,, the first couple of hours to was brilliant then the clag came an we spent 14 hrs in our bivi bags.

Missus has suggested Asia for this NY :)
