In the early 90s I went for a job as a lecturer at an FE/HE college. As was normal all the candidates arrived to be interviewed etc through the day. The other candidates said that they thought the job was mine, I was the best experienced and qualified there. The job went to a not yet graduated, BAME, woman. The reason they gave me was that ethnic minorities and women were underrepresented in the department, so she got the job. Positive discrimination apparently.

With hindsight I don’t mind. The commute would have rapidly pissed me off.
