Jerry Lewis: Refugees ‘should stay where the hell they are’

"Asked to weigh in on the Syrian refugee crisis, Mr. Lewis said bluntly: “Refugees should stay where the hell they are.”

“Hey, nobody has worked harder for the human condition than I have, but they’re not part of the human condition.”

Let's not be hypocrites: he was a horrible man, and his "humour" hasn't dated well. But mainly he was horrible.

And now he's dead.

I came here to ask if it was true he was an arsehole in real life. Cheers for the heads up. I'm showing my own declining years, tbh, 'cos when my wife told me that he'd died I had to think for a few seconds before I realised it was him and not Jerry Lee Lewis.

 He and his co-star Dean Martin were the biggest box office stars of the early 50s in the US. I don't have data to hand but I believe their films were pretty popular in the U.K. too.
And yet, half the posters here have never heard of him. :D

Perhaps I should rephrase: He was huge in France long after he had started to become forgotten in places like the UK.

I imagine half of the posters here were born after Martin and Lewis's last film in 1956. Just because you and others haven't heard of him, doesn't mean that someone wasn't very famous and popular.
I have heard of him. Sadly. But he was huge in France

Oh never mind.

I loved him as a kid. His films anyway. I've tried not to let his later shit opinions destroy my memories of enjoying his films though.

Not funny, I found him painful to watch even as a child. I even thought Paul Squires and Hope & Keen were funnier. (Look them up young ones)
TBH I thought he'd died long ago.
I hope we don't have to endure a season of his films.
A nasty man by all accounts.

Aside from The Nutty Professor which I haven't seen for years I never enjoyed his work and didn't care for his comedy persona. Doubt I'd think as much of Nutty Professor today but then that's true of a depressingly large number of the things I enjoyed when I was younger.

It's true that he is held in higher regard in France but that doesn't mean that he is universally adored. He simply has a dedicated fanbase there, in much the same way that say Sgt. Bilko has in the UK.

Interesting how some comedians play better abroad though. I remember discussing Benny Hill on an American message board years ago and being gobsmacked at the level of affection for his late period work.

I remember watching 'The Ladies Man' and being fascinated by the lengths he went to in building the huge set and how it worked throughout the film, but his humour doesn't age well and he was a colossal dicksplash.

Wonder if we'll finally get to see his infamous Holocaust Comedy / Drama 'The Day the Clown Cried' now?
