iPhone apps thread: fun and useful apps!

Seeing as the other iPhone is a bit of a monster and gone a bit weird how about a newer one focusing on the part of the iPhone likely to keep it successful? The apps!

Facebook have a new app for the iPhone which brings it closer to the desktop web edition:

Last night Facebook rolled out their highly anticipated new iPhone application and with it a whole slew of new features. Some of the new features includes:

• Access to a complete newsfeed duplicating the functionality currently available on the site. This includes feed item commenting which makes this a mobile competitor to FriendFeed,
• Access to all messages in your inbox,
• Full-access to notifications,
• Tabbed profile design with wall, info, and photos, and
• Search of other users outside of your friends with the ability to request new friendships.

These updates and others bring the majority of Facebook’s functionality to the iPhone. When it comes to mobile social networks, Facebook is proving that they are keeping on the edge with features galore to keep users happy. I for one might start using my iPhone again (instead of my Blackberry) with this new application.

Don't know about useful, but the apps I use on my iPhone are mostly Twitterific (Twitter client), Light, Last.fm (radio), NetNewsWire (RSS reader), and Real Football 09 (awesome soccer simulator). My kids also like JirboMatch and Super Monkey Ball.

I like:

iFooty - nice structured presentation of the BBC Sport league stuff.
Zenbe Lists - List application with syncing to web site
Tube Status - does what it says
Units - convertor (including currencies) like the one in the OS X dashboard
Google Mobile App - Googley goodness with ocation awareness

Interesting development:

Apple has finally allowed a Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP) program to be made available for the iPhone. Fring is available now at the iTunes store for free, and allows users to make voice communications over a wireless network using Fring’s network, or “Skype, Skype-out or any SIP providers you chose.” Users can also place calls to phone numbers using the service.

Since VLC is no longer available via the appstore, what's the best easy-use media player that will play avis, mkvs etc etc out of the box, or decent conversion 'ware. Preferably free but you know I might be prepared to pay.

Under useful apps, I use:

Evernote - useful for brain overflow
Calengoo - kicks the arse of the built in calender
Todo - Makes me remember all the annoying stuff and get it out the way. Has local notifications

Couldn't live without these now.
