I'm not sure where I fit in politically.

So I describe myself as a Conservative Liberal, is there such a thing or does such a description lie elsewhere?

try googling political compass, then tell us what it says, and await a variety of epithets and suggestions for improval.

you can describe yourself as anything you want but it's meaningless unless you give some indication of what you think being a "conservative liberal" is.

A good point. I describe myself as being a fearless hunter of politicians and seeker of truth, which means my political activity involves being naked at my computer a lot and firing off missives with too many exclamation marks!!!!!1

Well I kind of side with the modern day Conservatives, although at the same time I believe in doing something about the environment, I believe in a welfare state. So not sure really. I don't have any time for New Labour anyhow and the Liberal Democrats just seemed to be a confused party to me.

Incidentally after taking the political compass apparently I'm Liberal Democrat. But I wouldn't vote for them strange eh? What I mean is there are views to the right I agree with, at the same time there are views to the left I also agree with, it's not a cut and dry case.

You sound like a Lib Dem tbf

Remember of course that your political convictions may have a certain place in the political spectrum, but that doesn't mean the parliamentary party purporting to be about your values actually is.

seriously, try the political compass and tell us what it says and we'll let you know.

Do you think modern day Conservatives are more to the left of what was once the era of Margaret Thatcher and John Major. It does appear to me that it is less right and more left than it once was. That's what pisses me off about people who think, oh god Tory not again. I genuinely think that the modern day Conservatives are not like that any more. I could be wrong though, so do correct me if that is the case.

all the main parties are right of center.

The flavours may be slightly different but the 2-party system we have are slavish adherents of 'pragmatic' neoliberalist economics

this is a little dry but worth the following. And the book is better.

It's more of the same mate, honest. There are lots of threads on it on here.

I always come up bottom left corner - so "green" - but come election day I am wont to vote Lib Dem

I'm in a safe "Labour" seat with an MP who always tows the government line. :p

Are the Liberal Democrats right of centre to?

mate, it's neopolitan ice cream. Different colouring and flavours, but at the end of the day it's still ice cream. The political class are utterly divorced from even their own non-parliamentary members, let alone the apolitical folks.

It sounds like you'd be happy with any of the main parties to be honest, except if you actually believe in a welfare state as opposed to a workfare one, in which case you're in trouble.

I used to think Lib Dem candidates were more like normal people (well me, anyway), than most in the other two parties ...

But .... Lembit Opik ... though I suppose someone has to represent the nerds ...

A system where people can get benefits but only if they're hard-working and deserve them and aren't layabouts etc etc.

No then I believe in the Welfare one. I mean some people find it hard to work don't they. Although that said, I think there should be a system for weeding out the sponges and a system for giving help to those who genuinely can't work the physically and mentally ill for example.

Well I kind of ...

There's nothing confused about the Lib Dem position - you are a Liberal Democrat, and its clearly you who's confused!

All political parties are coalitions of a range of positions so dont be surprised if you dont agree with all of them.

.

But the LDs are a coalition of liberals and social democrats, and that's a particularly problematic mix: the Labour party is a social democratic one and the Conservative party is liberal, so it's not suprising that the two don't work together well. The mad ones are all liberals, of course.

I know I'm confused, that's why I'm asking all these questions.

Ask yourself what things are important to you?
Do you think personal freedom is generally more important than the wishes of the majority?
Do you think inequality is natural or something to be against?

You're a workfareist then. They'll all do, I wouldn't worry too much about which one you vote for.

Conservative party liberal? Is this a new thing explain that to me.

Hmmm :hmm:. I think personal freedom is more important and inequality is natural, but is something wish should strive against. Even if it is natural.
