If you could live anywhere in Europe?

Also, quite by accident passed this chiming clock affair with dancing mannequins, just as it was going off at noon. It was like Trumpton or that episode of Dad's Army.

Not sure who all the dudes were, and we had a family debate about whether the half naked guy with the lamb was Jesus or John the Baptist. (I liked the argument that the guy was John and the Lamb was Jesus). We might find out or we might just go with our ignorance.

Making me homesick for my years in Porto. The Majestic was once owned by my friends' father.

Make sure you try a Franceshina. If you find yourself in the Jardim de Retiro there's a local's restaurant where the food used to be good and cheap. The electrico runs through the square. Close by there's a square, the name of which I've forgotten, where there's also a good cheap restaurant. It's the one with one of the hospitals in it.

The ladies are planning on trying a Franceshina, but I'm pretty sure they don't do veggie ones ;) so I'll be eating cheese again.

Yes, do. I kept trying, and failing,to recreate them at home.

Near the Bolsa there's a place that has veg ones. Frankly, I think they're terrible. But I'm a dedicated meat eater. Near Praça de Liberdade, on the same side as McDonald's (go in, it's a great building) there's a bit of a pedestrian area where you can get good Franceshina, and they also do sucking pig, which is really good.

We had lunch near there today. And beer because I'm not driving (I'm usually driving on holiday). I like beer at lunchtime.

There's a place called either Cafe de Paris or Cafe Brasiliera near there which is also nice. There's lots of nice places if you don't mind looking.

But if you can, go to Matosinhos there's some wonderful fish restaurants along there. Don't bother with the ones on the beach, go to the street that runs parallel. Very popular, but fewer tourists.

FYI on Saturday the Casa de Musica has a fair selling vinyl records for 1€ Of course there's no guarantee your want any, but for that price worth a visit?

There's a place called RUA that does a vegetarian one, or it did in summer 2015! It's a nice place anyway with tapas and a pleasant garden. Only got a FB page. RUA

If I could live anywhere....I'd pick Deia in Mallorca.
Never been there...but I'd love to go despite my sun photosensitivity.

It just seems to me to be absolutely beautiful, relatively unspoiled and easy going.

Went to Matosinhos today because the girls wanted street barbecued fish. So we got the Metro, which turned into an overground train, then went amongst the traffic on the roads to become a tram. Then, without missing a beat,...

...it only crossed the pavement and stared going across fucking lawns! And I'm not even joking!

I'd live Cirsica. south of France ambienance without maybe the snobbery of that part.

Though I spent a couple of summers bumming round the Greek islands in the 90s, but don't think I would like it now since it joined the Euro.

There are a lot of places round the Med i would like to retire to, have a bit of land, keep goats and bees and a few stray odd animals, but Corsica would be my first choice

In a previous life I've spent a fair bit of time in Corsica. Unless you can afford to live somewhere like Ile Rousse then I wouldn't consider it.

That's interesting Libertad. I was only on holiday there staying at Biguglia, and had a great couple of weeks. Not far from the vapital, hired a car drove inland and around. I guess of course holidaying and living can be different, but I didn;t find prices so much more than I thought, and then only in the main areas.

I guess I like the feel of it. I was there when France won the world cup and it was also Bastille weekend so very much a party air to it :)
