I may have to give away my lovely cat

Reno

image.jpg I've decided to move back to Germany after 34 years in London. I've been considering leaving the UK for a couple of years. One of the main reasons why I've put it off is because I truly love my cat Alfie and I'd find it very hard to part from him. But now I've made up my mind to move to Berlin. My flat is going up for sale this week and because of the type of property it is and and because of the location, it's expected to sell pretty fast despite the post-Brexit jitters. I've always thought of taking him with me, but the more I think of it, the more I wonder whether it would be best for him to find a new home here in the UK. The three main reasons are:

1. After I've sold my flat I'll be transient or in temporary accommodation for weeks or months till I've found a permanent home in Berlin. Even if I decide to take my cat, I'll have to find a foster home for Alfie while I'm in-between homes.

2. Alfie is an outdoors cat and has been all his life and I'm unlikely to find a flat with outdoor access in Berlin, where everybody lives in apartment blocks. I've been trying to get him used to staying indoors but so far he hasn't been very cooperative, meouwing his head off and trying to wrench the locked cat flap off its hinges.

3. I work in animation and unlike in London, there isn't that much animation work in Berlin. I would probably have to travel for work every so often, living in different cities for weeks at a time. I don't actually know anybody in Berlin who could look after him.

Advise me what to do, it really would break my heart to give him up.

He's a gorgeous and absolutely wonderful cat both in looks and personality. He's five years old, affectionate and purry. He's never peed or pooped anywhere he shouldn't, always uses his scratch post rather than furniture and he isn't one of these cats who suddenly turn on you and scratch and bite, he truly is the most gentle of cats. He's snipped, chipped and up to date with his vaccinations. The only thing is that it takes him a while to warm to new people and situations and that it would probably take him a while to settle into a new home. When I've had him stay with friends while on holiday, he hid for most of the time.

I've started enquiring among friends, but of course the ones who love cats and can have one, already have one and it isn't a great idea to force cats to live together when they've had a home to themselves all their lives. My best friend has said that if everything fails, she'd take him. She has a cat but lives in a house large enough that they could stay out of each other's way.

If I were to give him away I'd be looking for a home where he could go out without a busy road nearby and where he'd be the only cat. I'm not quite there yet, but once the flat sells, things have to move fast and I will have to make a decision.

Just writing this is making me weepy. :(

I'll ask around my friends if you want, we all live out in the 'burbs with much more outdoor space than in London and all my friends are cat fans......

I'd totally take him, but I don't think my cat would accept a second cat in the house.

Sorry to read this. As you know we recently moved to Hamburg. I came first leaving the fella and cat behind. We managed to find a flat on the ground floor so she could get out and has access to a yard. There was no way I could bring her over before I was settled in one place. But now that I am she's taken to her new environment like a duck to water.

I understand your worries about being away for periods of time. If it helps, I have a very close and trusted friend in Berlin who sits cats for people when they are out of town. If it helps I could put you in contact with her... Maybe you don't have to give up your cat.

Thank you, that would be great. I'm still wrestling with the idea and what my options are.

How did you move your cat over there ? I don't drive, but I've looked at Lufthansa and apparently you can take a pet under 7 kilos into the cabin.

Got to run some errands now, but back later...

We got a friend to drive us over in his van. The vet gave us some valium for her  We needed to bring our bikes and mattress over with us as well as some other things and it was a cheaper option than shipping stuff and then having to both fly over in addition. I was a bit worried about taking her on a long drive like that but after two lots of valium and she was ok.

Aw, he looks so lovely. I'd gladly take him myself if it weren't for my old girlcat.

Hope you find a way to take him with you.

Reno my mate says she would happily cat sit. Will pass on her email via pm so you can chat to her.
That would be great ! I'm in Berlin the first November weekend, maybe we could meet up then.

I'm going to give it a shot with my friend next week and see how mine gets on with her cat. Really, it's the biggest headache for me with this whole moving country thing, worse than the prospect of selling my flat. The little fucker is just so loveable. :(

I really hope you get to stay together ❤ I'm just waiting for her to drop me her email and will pass it to you.

If you do have to part company from Alfie (and I sincerely hope that you don't) - but if you do, please ensure the new feeder either is on Urban or joins Urban as Alfie is one of my favourite Urban cats and I'd like to keep following his adventures

I've have some experience of moving two adult male cats in together. I've done it at least 5 times. Every time it's worked perfectly, the males avoid each other at first or sometimes they get grumpy with each other but it doesn't take long until they can live happily together. :)
Moving a small female cat in though is a pain in the arse :(

My friend has now rejected the idea because she's got some family problems, but she recommended me an friend who may be able to foster him for a while. She's just slow to respond to her emails.

I have a small garden in Croydon. It has a catflap to the back garden. I don't have a cat as mine got rehomed at my mums when I was in a temporary living place. I would also be a back up cat fosterer for you if needed for a short or longer time.
Thank you, that is much appreciated ! Still figuring it out.

The latest turn of events is that Alfie has basically moved out and only comes home for food and a brief evening cuddle. It's very odd, like he knows that I'm planning to leave. He's found an empty flat on the estate a few doors down where he he stays most of the day and night. He gets in through the air vent, I've got an electrnic tracker on him to find him.

My flat is now up for sale and there already is a lot of interest and I've been told by the agent that things are likely to move fast.

I'm now tending more to having Alfie adopted so he can stay here. He really doesn't take well to becoming an indoor cat, I've tried to get him used to it, but there is nonstop meouwing and clawing at the cat flap till I crack and let him out again. I don't think he would be happy in Berlin. I'm thinking of doing a direct adoption, which means it would go via a rehoming centre who do all the checks with potential new owners, but he can stay here till its time to go. If I decide to do that and anybody here is interested in taking him, I'll let you know once he's up for adoption.

Fuck. :(

Don't beat yourself up (too much  ) Reno.
I've taken on a few older rescue cats, and they generally settle really well into their new homes, so you're not going to ruin his life or anything. FWIW, I think you're doing the right thing not taking him to Berlin, and if it's the right thing for you, you need to do it.

We can take him. We have been thinking of getting a cat for a while anyway.
If you PM me we can arrange to meet if you want to check us out and want to find out more about our set up in terms of nearby roads / garden / vets etc...

Thank you very much for your kind offer, it's much appreciated and most certainly considered. I'm still dithering, every time I feel I've made peace with the idea of giving him away, I panic soon after. Please bear with me. I'm also in the middle of selling my flat and a bit stressed by that. I'll get back to you soon !

He's moved back in and his latest strategy is being mega-cute.
