I became a muslim last night

No you can't just switch on a faith, but you can take measures to ease family hassle. What's hard to understand about that?

Well its sort of quite serious blasphemy to pretend to believe when you don't. It'd be a bit like lying under oath.

Nothing hard to understand that you might like to make family life easier. But converting to a whole new belief system? Fuck that for a game of laughs. That's not just "making things easier" that's changing your entire life to a religion that you may or may not believe in. Which is utterly pointless. if they can't accept you as you, then fuck them IMO.

If you don't believe in it it means nothing. It's not like a seven year conversion to Judaism or something, it's an imam saying a few words.

See my point above. How can you blaspheme a religion you don't believe? I'm not saying real muslims would be too happy about it, just that it doesn't mean anything to that person unless they want it to.

Presumably that would classify as some sort of heresy, which is by far and away the worst possible thing in Islam (and most other religions for that matter).

It's because I don't believe that I couldn't swear that I do.

That's you. Not everyone operates like that. Tbh if I had a choice between years of upset for me and my loved one and possibly the threat of serious violence, or saying a few words I didn't believe, then well, mus me up.

if you don't believe in it,then why convert? that's what i can't understand. A belief system is something that's quite personal and stuff. not something that can change with the wind. And only half jumping into it to please someone, is going against the whole thing IMO.

I don't have a local mosque. I probably would have gone if I did!

There was quite a big mosque really close to the main campus where I went to university. They had a canteen on site that sold huge plates of rice, curry and salad for 3 quid a time. It was delicious stuff. I always wondered whether it was supposed to be a business enterprise or specifically for the umma. Either way, during term time the place was flooded with students everyday.

They also sold Mecca cola (10% contribution to Palestinian refugees - always suspected that meant Hamas) and 9/11 conspiracy DVDs.

I converted.
It's actually pretty good to do. Even if the Op did it for family reasons, it's worth taking up some of the traits of Islam.
The not boozing is a cracker to start with. I used to be a bit os a piss artist. Stopping was a cracking move. No hangovers and I feel great all the time.
No way would I go back to it.
Come Eid, join in the festivities but make sure you go to a mosque first thing. You will find out why when you have experienced it first time. Go a couple of times before and get someone to show you how to prey so it's not a total mystery when you go.

I'm reading Phil's post as not wishing to be disrespectful.

I tried this once.

I just felt sober all the time. :(

Yeah of course, I wouldn't exactly flaunt it, but life isn't as black and white as do the right thing or do the wrong thing. I wouldn't let it be known that I don't believe in God if I was in a church, but I'd go if it made my family happy.

I know a couple in Malaysia, an American guy and a Muslim Malaysian woman. They married, had children and one of her daughters has left the country with her b/f. The daughter was not brought up any religion but her husband is a muslim. They decided to give up their families rather than each other.

That makes more sense to me. If you love someone, it won;t matter what either of you think. Just being together is enough. You don't need to put a label on it or anything, that's just very silly in my book.

paying lip service to a set of vaguely acceptable principles and ignoring the bad shit? that's your average Anglican ennit.

You're more of the Pentecostal sort xes. Taking the religion srs rather than just a socio-cultural bauble.

I agree with this. As I said, I've considered converting because it might well have legal implications one day. After all, if Muslim countries insist on different legal treatment for people of different religions, what do they expect? But then I decided I couldn't go through with it. But I don't blame those who do.

That's nice, but not everyone wants to give up their families.

:):D:cool: at all posts

I am going to gradually get an understanding of islam. i am going to do some of the things now and then - such as going to the mosque, learning prayers, reading up about it, low level fasting (!). I'm going to take the things from it that will be good for me.

i already rarely eat pork cos i live with my family. as far as booze goes, i'm cutting down anyway after an award-winning booze career, so although i will still have a few, it won't be in anyone's face, as it were.

But the main thing, philosophically, is that to be able to be with my family, i have made small gesture, which although a bit of a stab in the dark, might be quite interesting

Well I don't think it was through choice on her side, but it was with him. I believe they received death threats from his family for him being with a non-muslim :(

Despite how my previous posts might come across :D the day to day basics of the big three are quite similar and pretty positive really. Be nice to each other seems to be the overriding theme

The OP makes me want to vomit, the gutless cunt, well I presume he is either a gutless muppet who thinks it's fine to buy into any old shite for the sake of family convenience.

Seriously finding faith in a religion out of convenience is disgusting on so many levels, to yourself, to atheists and believers, it essentially makes you scum to everyone as you've displayed a lack of conviction in everything and will just go with the wind.

speaking of a stab in the dark, what you doing with your foreskin?

in what has turned out to be an incredible slice (;)) of luck, i was circ'd when i was 11 because my foreskin was fucked. altho it was one of most painful things ever (i had it re-sewn up 2 weeks later after it burst after getting in a fight at school), now i know it was some sort of cock-related destiny

And the other 2 of your big three, everyone will burn in hell for all eternity.

Nah, don't kid yourself. You can be nice without religion. It's bollocks.

It must be really irritating when something like this frustrates your attempts to compartmentalise your prejudices.

What other two? I think it's only Christianity who have hell.

And er, yeah, I know :D but on the whole religion does more good than harm, HONEST.
