I became a muslim last night

Which is odd for a plastic paddy with a love for booze.

I converted mainly because my girlfriend and our son are muslims, and her parents are traditional people. We are getting married at the weekend at our house.

After a few meetings with an imam, who was a really nice bloke, where he discussed the basics of Islam, he held my hands and i said La ilaha illallah Muhammad-ur-Rasulullah and that was it.

Although i can admit that at the moment i am not exactly a devout kind of character, it was quite a heavy experience - and a positive one.

Anyone else had a religious loft conversion?

So do you have to, like, believe anything or is this basically about familial harmony?

I'm assuming you know about the bacon sarnie thing.

I just found a crucifix on the wall of my newly rented house. It's not on the inventory so I put it in the bin.

Then I realised it was brass, so I took it out and put it in the recycling.

Does that count at all?

I've considered it, since my wife is nominally Muslim, as will be our son, and there are circumstances where my being nominally Christian might pose a problem. I was thinking "since it's all just nominal who gives a toss? None of us practice any religion anyway." But that's probably not the right attitude to go into these things with.

Is it like Christianity in that you can piss all over the rules so long as it's 'nominal'?

Have you got yerself a koran yet?

It's got moses in it. You may remember him from such tales as 'the plagues of egypt' and 'parting the red sea'

Not sure if his lesser known brother Aaron is in it. He was always the Paul Ross to Moses' Jonathon Ross.

Pretty much. The only thing you have to do to be a Muslim is agree that "there is only one God and Mohammed is His prophet." I can't even do that.

My friend's boyfriend's just done this because if her parents find out they're living together now they're less likely to get killed.

Do you feel sort of... holy? :hmm:

I once fasted for Eid.

Did you mention it on here? I recently read Catholics are meant to fast for three days a week and though "aw we are hardcore after all", but read a bit further and found out their idea of fasting is not eating red meat

So ... hold on ... it's a god who can't even protect you from your *fellow worshippers* reliably?

Yeah, this is something I've never "got" about converting becasue you're going out with someone from a faith. You can't just switch on a faith, like that. It's a belief system, and comes with beliefs and stuff. Also, you've got to get circumsised. :D

(if I were you, I'd stick with the spiritualism :) )

Hold on, stop the bus, WHAT??

No you can't just switch on a faith, but you can take measures to ease family hassle. What's hard to understand about that?

I think I might have made a passing reference to it.

I accept that my experience was not the the experience of a Muslim, in a Muslim family, and going to the mosque, but it was pretty interesting all the same.

I was so fucking hungry about an hour before I could eat. And the year I did it, it was around this time of year, so the days were very long.

I know a guy who "became" muslim for a wife, at the age of 65. She made him get the chop becasue it's part of the religion. He did it too :D Then he broke up with her, and started on the booze, 2 weeks later he's back with her, all muslim again. Like it's some kind of tap. It ain't.

Presumably you didn't have the benefit of a gigantic communal feast before sunrise and after.

Nothing hard to understand that you might like to make family life easier. But converting to a whole new belief system? Fuck that for a game of laughs. That's not just "making things easier" that's changing your entire life to a religion that you may or may not believe in. Which is utterly pointless. if they can't accept you as you, then fuck them IMO.
