Historical poverty maps of London

Booth’s maps of London are now available- free- to explore online Home | Layers of London | Recording the Layers of London's Rich Heritage

(They have been available in limited form on lSE website for a while)

In case you’ve never heard of them/him- he was a philanthropist (and virulent anti-Semite) who worked to better understand the distribution and causes of poverty in London, to support his public health work. He was pretty right wing, yet trained famous left wingers including Beatrice Webb; cofounder of the LSE, socialist labour campaigner and Stalin apologist. It’s a fascinating group of people doing interesting and important work. Albeit with some really dodgy attitudes....

Anyway- this made me happy and they are fascinating. And most of the new threads are miserable. So there :)

(To add- that website takes a while to get used to. It’s interactive maps that you can add layers to from the historical record. You need to play a bit to get the hang of it)

Nice idea and website in principle.

It's a shame that it's not very user friendly and seems rather glitchy. Maybe it will get better with time.

It is vile on the phone. Much better on the desktop version.

Every time they add a new map it hiccups a bit. I’m not sure they have the infrastructure to make it seamless- it feels sometimes like they are learning as they go along. Looking forward to the bomb damage maps going up...

The bomb damage map seems to be available for my local area. I was looking at it before everything seemed to seize up and I just got a blank screen. This is on desktop.

Super glitchy, which is a shame. There should be an option to choose to look at each layer individually instead of layering them.
