Has anybody got a robot vacuum cleaner?

nottsgirl

Hi, how are you
I absolutely hate vacuuming but love having a clean floor. Has anyone got a robot vacuum cleaner and can give any feedback? Apparently they’re not very good in cluttered spaces (which my flat is). Thanks.

I've got one. They're handy things to have (although the cat refuses to sit on it ) but mine has a habit of getting stuck on a rug or other random objects and its relentless beeping when that happens winds me up.

If I bought one again I'd probably get one that maps the area because mine crashes around the flat and bangs into objects like a drunk coming home at 3am. And an auto-emptying one would be handy too.

That's a shame. I'm not convinced about their cleaning abilities, but we were talking just last night that it might be funny to get one for the cats.

They're actually great if you've got a hair factory cat like mine - just schedule the thing to run every morning or whatever and that gets rid of a lot of the hair, and then have a proper DIY hoover every 3 days or so.

I use a Shark cordless which is great.

My immediate thought was "every three weeks, more like" :D
Yeah that’s about right here too

My mate has a robot one, it maps the area, think it empties itself too. Seems to rate it.

How do they work on stairs? Or do they not handle stairs?

When you say 'empties it' do you mean in a nice pile in the middle of the floor?

Not convinced they'd be any good for me because the dust seems to accumulate under places a robot wouldn't be able to get under. Would need a nozzle attachment.

I think it returns to its hutch when full and empties the dust into a bigger container, though I didn’t see that in action

I don’t have stairs.

Seems like I need one that maps the space. They’re pretty expensive though. But I do really hate vacuuming.

I’ve got one , there’s positives and negatives but overall I’m pleased I got one .
Mine maps the house ( there’s no upstairs) and the maps is stored on the phone app. You can get it to clean by room ( although the mapping can sometimes have a weird idea of rooms ) or by zones which you draw on the map . You can get the bot to remap the house if you don’t like it .
On mine you can also put in no go zones which I use for under the tv table/ cabinet as there are loads of cables .
I have 4 dogs so lots of hair, tiled floors. The bot is great on that , although it doesn’t see the hairs it just brushes /vacuums the area mapped out so occasionally it will brush some into areas it’s already covered .
I put down rugs in winter however unless you use rug grippers or adhesive mats the bot will sometimes end up pushing the rug up and getting stuck .
Mine self empties into a sack in its housing unit however if there’s too much hair sometimes it gets matted and doesn’t empty properly .
Mines also got a mopping function which is useful but not for anything too engrained. You can’t add detergent but white vinegar is ok .
I hover manually about once a week as the dog hair ends up in corners or under chairs/ settees etc .
I paid 350 euros and I think it’s been a useful investment, I would get a cheaper one tbh . It’s not a substitute for having a hoover but it means you hoover less . The dogs got used to it very quickly .

I think a good cordless would be better for me for getting under near inaccessible spaces. I did get a relatively cheap Bosch but it's crap really, nowhere near enough power for carpets or floors although useful for reaching cobwebs. A mate gave me an ancient standup Vax which is really good but unwieldy and a bugger for stairs even with the attachment.

I've got a Eufy which is better than my cordless but not as good as an old fashioned corded.
Most of my floors are hard floors so does the job.
Doesn't do stairs but has a neat detector which stops it committing suicide and flying down the stairs.
It has another nice trick where it ups the suction power when it detects its on carpet.
I love having it as I hate hoovering.
Very satisfying when WFH and you can hear a mild noise in the background doing the work

Does it suck in dust from the side if it's blocked by a chest of drawers with a slight gap underneath it? And which Eufy can I ask?

They are worth it in my opinion. My partner has ME now so is quite limited which means a lot of the house stuff falls on me which is fine, but a lot. We weren't amazing at doing it before, and even if she fully recovered I think we'd always have one.

Our floor has never been as clean, and our dog itched way less. They definitely work better than when we hoovered which was probably always a bit of a rushed job. The only annoying thing is it does get errors occasionally.

I love mine. It cleans about 80% as well as you doing it yourself with a hoover - it doesn't get right into the corners and it gets stuck under the kitchen chairs. I loathe hoovering though so I'm really happy with that - it's that or hoovering about once a month and it would be really bad by that stage. I wish there was one that did stairs though. I fucking hate hoovering the stairs.

I set it off most evenings after dinner so it keeps the place a reasonable level of clean. I kinda wish I'd splashed out for the mopping one though.

I take approximately 3 minutes to vacuum my flat. I think a robot vacuum cleaner would be able to do 100% as well as me.

I may think about this - have been wondering about getting a Which subscription because they have an offer on, Which does say there's huge variations in performance with some being faff.

I'd probably have to go round the house in preparation putting bits of furniture on other bits of furniture because most of the dust accumulates behind it. You can apparently get them with small brushes coming out from the side that will pull dust into the path.

Mop sounds a fine idea with me having a dog and loads of slate floors. Probably all adding to the price though :(

I borrowed my daughters for a week and it was surprisingly good at getting itself unstuck and not falling down stairs. And it did a good job at picking up dust and sawdust and dog hairs. This was in a quite big space with stacks of wood and odd tools lying around, when we’d moved into a place we were renovating. I also hate vacuuming, but it’s the noise that I don’t like rather than the action. I mean, I really don’t enjoy any cleaning or tidying and only do it because one should, and rather sweep than vacuum. The robot, which I called Bernard, was not silent, and took much longer than I would have with my Henry. I imagine if you could go out and leave it it would probly be ok

The mopping ones are even more £££

Technically they just drag a damp cloth round the floor after doing the hoover bit but that's about the same level of enthusiasm I mop with so 🤷‍♀️
Just looked them up, gosh that’s pricey. Not that much of a priority then

I've actually been doing a bit of mopping of floors recently after a p r o p e r spring clean and I quite enjoy it because you see a real difference as you're doing it because of the dog (did I mention I have a dog) and the mud. So that could save me £££s ta :)

If you cover the floor of your flat in about a foot of soil, roll turf onto it, and install sprinklers and lamps on the ceiling, you could get a robot lawnmower instead. Robot lawnmowers are endearing little creatures. They mulch grass clippings automatically and achieve even lawn coverage through stochastic motion within a wire boundary.
