Violent robber who killed some cops got caught and just missed the noose so got a long term in prison instead.

Are you sure you're not confusing him with George Davis ? Remnants of the graffiti campaign about Davis survived into the 80s, maybe longer.

there was two versions of the chant at football usually sung when the police would move into the rowdy areas;

at sunderland;

Harry Roberts is our friend, is our friend, is our friend
Harry Roberts is our friend,
He shoots Coppers.
Shoots the bastards with his gun, with his gun, with his gun,
Shoots the bastards with his gun,
Harry Roberts.

And the alternative I heard from London clubs;

...
He kills coppers
Let him out to kill some more, kill some more, kill some more,
Let him out to kill some more,
Harry Roberts

I had no idea who he was, I just knew it wound up the coppers so that was enough for me.

Roberts was a nasty piece of work who deserved everything he got. Saying that he's nearly eighty now so I doubt he's going to be gunning down any more coppers, and I'd have more sympathy for the met's outrage this morning if they didn't keep killing people and then covering it up.

you can't argue with three dead cops, mind, that makes up for a certain amount of ill behaviour.
