I saw him speak twice when he came to London a few years ago to promote his biopic. One of his events was at the Royal Festival Hall and the other, more intimate and informal, was at the Ritzy in Brixton.
He's one of very few people I'm a diehard fan for.

My Mum was always playing one of his albums, when I was 3 or 4 years old early 60s.. Lovely voice, and a wonderful man.

Was it at RFH where I saw him with you? (Venue was much less salient to me than the speaker.)

In any case, he was an excellent human being.

Definitely a good innings. He was tired and ailing and fighting the good fight until the end, with honour and dignity.

I was literally enthusing about him about 2 hours before I heard the news. I took up a full five minutes of a work meeting. Many of you have experienced similar from me. Then my colleague spotted Fergal Sharkey and went wobbly, so we both had a fangirl moment.
