Hampton & Richmond v Dulwich Hamlet - Saturday 12 January 2019

Can't see a specific thread for this, so here goes. An Oystercard awayday against a team whose current form is about as poor as ours, so a big chance for three much-needed points. Decent pubs nearby and a chance to see the new signings in league action. I'm in!

Half hourly train service departs Waterloo at 12 & 42 minutes past the hour (journey time 41 minutes), also calls at Vauxhall, Clapham Junction, Wimbledon. No scheduled engineering works. The ground is an easy stroll from Hampton station (not Hampton Court or Hampton Wick); just turn left along the main road and the ground is on the left after a few hundred yards.

Two half decent pubs on the way to the ground, The Railway Bell and The World’s End, plus the club bar is OK too.

The Jolly Coopers in the High Street a few minutes walk beyond the ground is a Good Beer Guide regular and probably the best pub in town for the ale hound. Not cheap though!
Cheers for that - might check it out afterwards. The Railway had Otter on (my favourite Devon ale) when I last visited.

I prefer post-match beers, especially for home or more local games, so it's turn up at the ground for 3pm, maybe just the one at the Railway Bell. (World's End has had a few "Bell Ends" in the past in my experience.)

Did you find the micropub in Evesham at the Gloucester game?

I couldn’t make it to Evesham unfortunately as was working. My next long-distance away trip is to Torquay.

Foodbank Collections to start again this Saturday!
Happy New Year to all our amazing supporters.
Now that we have all hopefully recovered from the Christmas and New Year festivities we will again start collections for our local foodbank at the Dulwich Hamlet game this Saturday 12th January.
It was actually Dulwich that we got the original idea from, so thank you to Dulwich Hamlet.
Please see below the message received from the Manager of the Richmond Foodbank before Christmas:
' ... Ideas for this week’s collection are toilet rolls, tinned meat, tinned vegetables, long life fruit juice, squash, biscuits, dried pasta, cooking sauces and any toiletries, but basically any goods that have a 6 month or more shelf life would be really appreciated.
We can also accept cash contributions (if you don’t have time to shop) which we are turning into requested goods before we make the delivery to the foodbank.

I like a sprig of parsley on my pint of Hoffmeister. Will settle for a win if unavailable.
Hofmeister has been relaunched as a really pukka Bavarian lager by someone who bought the name. I had a bottle at the Dulwich Beer Dispensary a few weeks ago when a sales rep came in with some free samples. I have to say it was superb.

"When you know lager, you're a Skolar."

"Stays sharp,to the bottom of the glass."

"Works wonders!"

My favourite was "I bet he drinks Carling Black Label", which I would repeat whenever I saw someone behaving stupidly in a pub.

great ad , featuring east dulwich resident steve frost , i see him around se22 a lot

i have to say , that stuff was horrible back in the day , i put it in the same category as lowenbrau .

Was Hofmeister “Follow the bear”?
Yes. "For great lager, follow the bear". It was dreadful. When I was a barman at the Florence Nightingale at Waterloo we served it. Foster's was the other session lager and we must have sold 4-5 kegs of that to each one of Hofmeister. Two security guards from St Thomas's Hospital came in after their shift and drank about 8 pints each. Barely anyone else touched it.

I got to Banstead Athletic about an hour before kick off once for a Reserve game. As I ordered another pint of Hofmeister, which I was quaffing in my usual quick puss head style, the barman asked if that was my fourth pint. I thought he was going to crack a joke about me being a bit of a puss head, but no... there was a promotion...& after five pints of Hofmeister you got a free T-shirt!

Had many a long session in the Flo, great pub for watching posh people make tits of themselves... along with the archetypal resident pub Jocko! Recall one time I had had a card to record your units during some national safe drinking week nonsense, & vowed to beat the weekly units limit by adding a zero to the end, much of it achieved in the Flo...

I only ever went in there once - on a Thursday night towards the end of its existence and it was almost empty. I worked on the South Bank (we rented the top four floors of the LWT Tower and they had their own bar that we could use.) After that, we’d often decamp to the Hole in the Wall - a bit of a khazi of a pub but I was knocking about with one of the barmaids at that time!
