Greatest WW2 Film?

The Longest Day.

"I tell you, there's some pretty peculiar fellows on this beach"

Sunday afternoon one that though.

I've seen Flame and Citron. It's quite good, and highlights the tensions in resistance movements in occupied countries a bit better than has been done previously.

Both decent big mainstream type films. Die Brucke is a genius film.
I came across them through Silencio Roto, about the Spanish maquis. Any Greek WW2 films worth a look? I was going through my dad's things and found a 1948 copy of Time magazine with Markos on the cover, and it piqued my interest somewhat. Dunno much about Greece at all.

And is there an English version of the massive Russian film Liberation about. Not literally an English version, one with subtitles that aren't in forrin. I mean.

Cheers for the heads up on Army of Shadows, just ordered a copy for a couple of quid from Amazon. :)

My local independant flicks ask for film suggestions, I did a long list a few weeks back, so hopefully Cross of Iron & Come & See will shortly be seen on the big screen by me for the first time.

Greek/Macedoninan one called Black Seed about the aftermath of the civil war - well as regards communist POWs anyway. Very good film.

Also Theo Angelopoulos has a great loose trilogy about Greece in the 30s-50s, the best of which is The Travelling Players which deals with the Civil war, but both other parts are worth watching too The Hunters which covers the same sort of territory as Black Seed, and Days of '36 which covers the pre-war political conflicts. = Warning: all very long and very slow.

Only found LIberation without eng subs.

Great Escape is pretty classic - and mostly historically accurate bar Steve Mc Queen on a motorbike.

Addtional votes for Bridge too Far, Das Boot, Cross of Iron, Ice Cold in Alex and the Cruel Sea as well.

Anyone else seen 'Operation Daybreak'? 1975 film about the Czech resistance asassinating Nazi Governor Rienhard Heydrich. Stars Martin Shaw before he was in the Proffesionals. Gritty and very tense.

I saw about 45 mins of The Wooden Horse a few years ago - 1950s b&w POW film. Is it me or was it blatantly homo-erotic?

One of the most impressive I've seen:

Also a classic study in leadership, apparently..

All the battlescenes are actual footage - scary stuff.

WW2 is a big subject, it's continued almost weekly coverage is a testament to the amount of information it created and archived. Are we talking about military events? if so 'Downfall' & 'say Come and see 'don't really fit that category, both them are still exceptional cinema.

Saving Private Ryan for all it's hollywoodisation is a break through film in terms of realising the view from the soldier. 'Bridge too far' has some great scenes but i'm not sure i like the style so much. Would like to see 'Stalingrad.'

Theres a German film called The Bridge (Die Bruecke) (had to google it as its possibly 20-25 years since ive seen it). Its about a group of schoolboys forced to fight against the Americans in the last few days of the war.
This thread reminded me of it.

and would have still been a great film without him. I don't know why they bowed to his demands to have him and his bike in the first place.

still a fan of Battle of Britian - apparently Walton scored the whole movie, but was replaced by Ron Goodwins music, a aprt form a few ariel battle scenes

Hell in the Pacific ? Lee MArvin vs Toshirô Mifune and pretty much no one else - a Boorman filum - not uplifting

A bridge too far for the best line up of big names - followed by Longest day I spose

All good choices, but I reckon that if The Machine Gunners was ever made into a film that would be the best evah.

No idea why it hasnt been. Best childrens book about the war through the eyes of a child ever I reckons.

Tobruk is probably my favourite WWII action film.

Midway & Tora! Tora! Tora! are both pretty good.

Didn't they do a series of it years ago? I used love that book as a kid, I remember it being quite a cult book at school as it was one the only book in our school libary with swear words in it. :D

And thats why it would make a great film - a lot of old skool nostaglia amongst the 30 somethings, a market with the older crowd, and a following with 'ver youth'.

Man, we should buy the rights on Urban - we could all be in it, and film it and everything. It would be *ace*

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0057652/

That's the one that most did it for me. Peppard, Finney, etc....
And ta to you too. I was trying to think of the name of that one.

its not a film but someone reminded me of Band of Brothers earlier...i'd love to see that again...last time i checked a box set was about £60
