General non league chat, match reports, photos etc

They used to pay stupid money. Half their team lived up north and were put up for free Friday and Saturday. Tidy ground too. A hotel bar was probably the worst place ever to celebrate. Been there, seen it, done it. As an aside we were at Grays the day the Grand National was abandoned.

As an aside I played for Hitchin fans to make numbers up in a 7 a side at Gray's. I was a rubbish football. There's a photo out there somewhere of me in a Chelmsford shirt and Hamlet shorts and socks.

You were a rubbish football? But you have such a nice round shape. :D

Never did get a refund for the Grays sweepstake that day!

That's a fair effort but on the face of it a Dartford Supporter's Association isn't the most deserving cause I can think of by a long way.

Leaflets apparently thrown out of the car as they were doing it - anyone know what was on them? Advertising for local undertaker? :)

If you have been around non league you will know this author. It hints at what the other sources are saying

Rather reminded of the “Coffin Incident” of 1989 that first attracted me to the Hamlet

It the weirdest reason I have heard of for match to be called off

I have to ask what did the do when in attendance because I cant get my head around this?

"Mid-table" sounds overly generous to me. They were 8 points behind Fulham (who finished bottom of the top half) and the same number of points ahead of Everton, who stayed up on the final day. "London's 6th best team" might have been better.
I'm a Reading fan by birth, and still look out for their results, but I'm Winchester City now.

When I lived in Harrow, I was still following Reading "properly". I lived ten minutes walk from Harrow Borough's ground, but never went there, till one day when Aldershot were playing.

As a Reading fan, I went along expecting to take the piss out of them. It was mid week, in winter. They had maybe 1,500 fans there.

I just felt respect to the fans who stayed loyal to the (phoenix) club. There are tales of a car full of Aldershot fans turning up in Chesham and asking for directions to the ground, only to be met by people saying they didn't know Chesham had a football team.

The way things are going, it won't be long before that's happening to Reading fans.

It was a Chelsea youth team, the adults are in the States.

Dover are now searching for a third assistant manager since the end of last season, having also missed out on several players announced as signed. Apparently Lee Flavin was largely responsible for several of their most recent recruits, so it remains to be seen whether any of them also jump ship. Their opening league fixture against Torquay is 6 days away, and it seems the chairman was acting as assistant manager for yesterday's friendly with Ashford.

I had a very enjoyable day at a Hellanic League Div 1 match yesterday, Newent Town v Chipping Sodbury, a fairly local derby on the Gloucester/Herefordshire border. Nice ground, small main stand and a couple of pergolas covering the barbecue area outside of the clubhouse and bar.
The standard of football was excellent, well above what would be somewhere between Dulwich and Peckham Town, says something about the strength of the Southern League and it’s feeders, tbh they would have given Dulwich a hard time.
Newent’s No.10 was a class act, talking to officials from the club, he’s been there for three years and moved from midfield to forward, played for Hereford and Worcester City around 240 games as a pro. Scored Newent’s second goal beautifully, wouldn’t be surprised if he scored the first too but that was down the other end with the view obscured by nets.
51 there, worst attendance of the season, down to a bank holiday weekend and six games played already, 180 the norm.

Yep sad news for East Thurrock who seemed a very well run club. Shafted by a promised investment failing to materialise it seems.
A real shame given that Grays will soon be playing at Ship Lane- would have been a very tasty local derby.

That is a real shame. Although we lost our visit in 2016 was a heap of fun
