GCSEs

They didn't exist when I was at school. I got 2 O levels, 3 CSEs and RSA Typing I and II.

Yeah, that's what I thought. Is that usual? Maybe my sister got it wrong. She posted up the resuls on Facebook.

Here's the thing, if you're clever and inquisitive I thinks really hard narrowing down what you're interested in and what you're good at when you're 14.

If your niece has had the opportunity to take lots of classes then that's brilliant, as long as she has the time to explore all the subjects equally well and have a decent extra-curricular life.

We specialise far too early here, its strange to think the last time someone studied history or geography was when they were 14.

She is really into health, fitness and dance so maybe some of them were in those subjects.

That is a really unusually large number of GCSEs; 17 in one year would make it really difficult to do the exams without them clashing. Maybe she's done some double ones like double science or English Lit/Lang.

Just to say (Again!) that masterdarkone passed all of his apart from RE-and I am really proud of him:D He registered for 6th form today and I really hope that he gets the social life that he wants-hahahahaha!! So he has 10 GCSE'S !

He has saved himself so much time-I left school with an O'level in English and ended up having to do an access course at age 38.

:) BRILLIANT! Well done Masterdarkone!

Really glad to hear this! 10 GCSEs should buy him a bit more of computer time, yes? :D

I reckon you left school maybe 83 or 84 then?

I left in 1982 and did GCSE maths

They were experimenting with some GCSEs at about that time. I think I have some of the papers kicking around somewhere... </sad>

O Levels died in 87 I think - I'm fairly certain my brother was the last year there or thereabouts.

Yep my sister did hers in '87, she was in the last lot that did them.

Also, BTEC is all on coursework, no exams although a lot of coursework stuff is done under exam conditions (ie silence and working on your own, but you do all the research beforehand).

17? Wow. I did mine in 94 and I took 11. That was pretty standard back then I think. I can't imagine doing 17 though. Madness.

I am also confused by this new 'half a GCSE' there seems to be.

Is it possible the workload content of GCSEs is slightly lower? Know I've posted this before but my sister did exactly half the amount of assignments we had to do for English GCSE (she was two years later)

That's the same as the old RSA1 or NVQ level 1.

Some BTEC courses are worth 4 GCSEs. I reckon that's it.

anyone who thinks a non-examined course is worth 4 GCSEs is living in cloud cuckoo land. Unless you get at least a B in a GCSE it's not worth having these days anyway. Most kids round here are getting about 12 with at least 5 or 6As. It's competitive enough for jobs and university places these days.
