GCSE Results - good luck if you're getting yours today!

My boy had a rollercoaster ride yesterday with his results. He did two GCSEs and his results email said he'd got a U in both.

Soon after there was another email saying there'd been a mistake in the system and his actual grades were....... a U in each.

Half an hour later a third email gave his real grades. Neither of which was a U

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't she part-Japanese? kind of gives her an edge there. Well done nonetheless.
Well yes. It's why she took Japanese, obviously it gives her a sizeable advantage. She did still have to study though. She has been going to Japanese school since she was about 7 I think. You have to know kanji and the structure behind the language. Apparently a fair amount fluent students who just think they can walk into an exam on the day fail. So yes, I would have been a bit disappointed if she got anything other than a 9, but I am proud none the less. She put quite a lot of work into it.

Yep, passes all round here too, including the extra one (German) she did because it seemed like a good idea at the time and Maths, which she hated every minute of.
I think everyone hates maths don't they? I genuinely (and am not just saying this as a parent who believes their kid is excellent) think that my daughter was held back by a few teachers, who in turn were held back by large classes and a challenging curriculum to keep up with.
U75s very own Rutabowa served as a maths tutor to help out in areas the school seemed to be missing out on, and also helped with encouragement in general The schools maths teachers method seemed to be to tell students they were stupid (and to look it up) if they asked for help.

Well, that's what I think! I came bottom of my entire year at my Grammar school in the 80s. Managed a CSE Grade 5* after coming to an arrangement with my Maths teacher where I sat at the back, stayed quiet and did whatever I liked. Got seven O-Levels, three A-Levels and a degree from a decent university, but I still don't know how to do long division or long multiplication. Yet my brother did a degree in Maths & Statistics. He thinks it's a breeze and 'fun'.

* I can tell you that to get a CSE Grade 5 and not a U you had to answer the two arithmetic questions at the start and (presumably) get your name and the school code right. That's what I did. I then had over two and half hours to check my arithmetic answers.

Maths is the one that people fear and is a massive stumbling block.

For me my dad went through stuff with me. Mostly just the classic of have a pencil and write down everything.

It might take a while but if everything is laid out in front of you you can puzzle it out.

My mental arithmetic is still absolutely non existent but thankfully I was OK at algebra and the like.

Toa cah soh

My daughter got a couple of 5s, a 6 and a bunch of 7s. Sadly one of the 5s was in a subject she wanted to do for A-Level but she's already spoken to the school and she's changing her A Level to Geography. She worked really hard so we are all proud of her. She is now heading to complete the final part of a GCSE year at Reading Festival

The foal - who has missed a lot of school over the last couple of years because of autistic struggles with things - has passed all his GCSEs, even though he hasn’t gone to maths lessons all year. So he now has 9 GCSEs and enough at grade 6 or higher to stay on for 6th form to do the subjects he wants. I’m really proud.

I’m especially proud that he and his mates cancelled their planned day out today as one of them didn’t get the grades he needed so they decided it would be shit for the rest of them to celebrate.

Took my daughter to enrolment this morning. The way they officially checked the grades was to look at a photo of the print out with all results on it. Super easy to forge. . . .and that's it. Its not like results are on your permanent record.

They are. Colleges don't normally check results that hard at enrolment. It's only if someone happens later that things are looked up.

Normally if it a vocational area and the kid is motivated enough to learn how to forge things they will be motivated enough to do the course.
