Fujiyama Japanese restaurant, Brixton

dammit, forgot to take the service charge off and pay a cash tip over the weekend.

to be honest, i try and do this at all times. can't stand places that use the 'service charge' to pay staff their regular wage. absolutely stinks

Loved the food in there, but it's a little too far away now, but we do get delivery from there regularly, very nice. Perturbed by the service charge thing though.

*thinks*

The one in the thin building, with the famous arsehole owner and tiny windows? Or the one over the road with the big glass windows that goes bust every 2 years?

Neon and then - famously - bang bang!

It was painted red for ages too.

This restaurant/bar has been through an ever rotating list of names in recent years with changing fortunes.

Five years ago, it was called Neon, before renaming itself to the tragically ill-advised 'Bang Bang' (strapline: "come to Brixton for a double shot!" complete with a gun on the leaflet).

Two young kids had been shot in McDonalds just a few days before the launch, so after an outcry, the bar became 'The Bar With No Name.' That didn't last too long though, as it's now known as the Tangiers Bar (which they've managed to misspell as 'Tangeir' on their sign!).

In the time it's taken to type this, it's probably been renamed.

Good point to raise. Will they let you strike the service charge and tip cash?

They dont like it. Last time I did, the owner came out to ask why I wouldn't pay it

Went there for lunch on Saturday and asked to pay the service charge in cash. No problem doing so. Of course this doesn't guarantee that the staff keep it but does make it more likely.

Had Fujiyama (delivered) for the first time last night.

I went for the Yaki Niku Don which for £6.85 was pretty good value for the portion and taste.
Six of us shared a portion of Spring Roll for £4.05 and Tori Gyoza (grilled chicken dumpling) for £4.95 which were also nice.

mjam mjam mjam, suddenly i am hungy.

i always really liked it foodwise.....but because they are very popular i felt the moment the food was finished one had to leave instantly (=presented with the bill). this rushed feeling i can't stand so avoided eating there after a while. i know its not the same type of food but i always preferred the eritrean restaurant on CHL -you can sit there for ages.

That's a shame. I loved eating there. I was practically neighbours with that place for over well over three years. Their noodle soups and cha han saw me through many post party comedowns.

I messaged them to ask for more details but I wouldn't be surprised if rising rents played a part in this...

I think the owners got another resturant and Brix was getting to expensive to run sadly. We did a final delivery order from them on their last night- the food was great as usual, the vegetarian stuff was top notch again. Will miss the place, the kids have grown up knowing Fuji

He (can't remember his name unfortunately) owned the whole building and sold to the people who are asking for the rent, there is also talk of the new owners going for planning permission to build more flats on top, he does an occasional stall at Herne Hill market on a Sunday

This was posted on the Buzz article::

if anyone has any forwarding numbers of the owners or anyone that could give me any info…….i was the carpenter whom first worked on the property and am trying to contact yanto or andy whom use to(maybe still did!!!!) own the fujiyama restaurant. would be greatfully appreciated. dave the joiner.

Apparently the woman who wrote / sung that song about milkshakes bringing all the boys to the yard started a popup in Brixton after retraining as a chef. I assume that was a while ago.

There was quite an interesting r4 programme about her. And her chefing.
