Frost symbol on my radiators

What does it mean?

It got down to -7 outside my house last night and I was quite worried about the baby. Mr madz's part of the village lost its power so he came here and he was pestering me to put the heating on. I conceded because of the baby so he went round and put all the radiators on to the frost symbol marking to see what would happen. Some of them heated up a bit, some of them didn't and this morning all of them were cold. So, what does setting them at that marker actually do?

I think it's a frost protection setting. Allows a trickle of water through to prevent them freezing up.

Aye, keeps them warm enough to stop excessive contraction in cold weather. If you did not have it then the pipes would split when warmed.

At the risk of soundling like an old fart it's the coldest I remember it ever being.

even if you have background heat on and are checking etc.... Its the anxiety!

Yeah stick em on 1 and leave the heating on constant IMO, warm the room you are in in the day properly and it shouldnt be too expensive ( I hope anyway! Thats what im doing)

Aye, me an all. Normally it's rare to have to even de-ice the car in the morning. It's fucking Siberian out there right now. Lovely and clear though. We've been able to see The Scillies from our place for the past couple of weeks.

She's at my mum's today so it's back off again. I have nearly all my clothes on and gloves and a hat It's not so cold now it's raining.

Yeah, we went to Sennen beach on NYD and you could see them clear as anything. I was always told it meant rain

That way the room stat will never get up to temp and the boiler will keep running just pumping hot water round the pipes.

Just turn the room stat down to 10 C then the boiler will switch off when it's taken the chill off.

The boiler will keep on running then unless it overheats then it will cut out but may need to be reset manually.
