Indeed.

There seems to be a disconnect where it's not possible to understand that someone else might find something offensive even if you don't, and that their offence is just as valid as your offence about something else.

At its heart, it's a complete lack of empathy.

All you have to do is sit back and think about a time when someone said or did something you didn't like, but they defended it. Then flip things around and apply them to the situation in hand.

Empathy-by-numbers.

but this isn't a misuse of language issue... it's about there being a difference between misusing language and therefore communicating ones ideas poorly and within that diminishing the level of comprehension within the audience as a result as well as the normalisation of that type of thing (joey decon mentality if you will) and being directly not really at all if you stop and think about it offensive as a joke.

I thought Boyle was absolutely brilliant on Mock The Week .... the show has never been as good since he left. If he resorts to making unfunny cracks at people like Rebecca Adlington, whether it's to try to whip up publicity or otherwise .... well, I say just ignore him until he starts saying stuff that's funny, rather than getting outraged about it.

I'd hardly say he 'resorted' to it - it was a throwaway tweet from a prolific tweeter that somehow got the nation's backs up. there's 'worse' on there on a daily basis. I laugh at the odd thing he writes but like most tweets, most of it's rubbish.
