Film of 2016/Oscars 2017

The Oscar nominations are announced tomorrow and we don't seem to have had Urban's annual film of the year thread.

My favourite films released in 2016 (in the US) that I have seen so far are:

Manchester by the Sea
Hell or High Water
I, Daniel Blake
The Jungle Book
10 Cloverfield Lane

What were some of yours?

Here's a list of Oscar eligible releases from last year:

Oscars: 336 Films Eligible for Best Picture in 2016

Also an honorary mention to Grimsby for one of the most disgusting/what the fuck scenes I have seen in a major movie.

Really can't think of any films in 2016 that were truly great, that i've seen.
Films i enjoyed;

Hunt For the Wilderpeople
Rogue One
Neon Demon
Green Room
The Witch
Anomalisa
Deadpool

Arrival
Suasage Party
Would say Rogue One but not seen it, I just know its going to be great

Suicide Squad and Batfleck vs a chin can both fuck off. Wasting my time

Tale of Tales or Arabian Nights trilogy for me. They'll get nowhere. La La Land of the films that will be nominated.

The announcements apparently begin at 5.18am. Why? What a very silly time

Best actor nominees
  • Casey Affleck (Manchester By The Sea)
  • Andrew Garfield (Hacksaw Ridge)
  • Ryan Gosling (La La Land)
  • Viggo Mortensen (Captain Fantastic)
  • Denzel Washington (Fences)
All were good but I think Casey Affleck's performance was the best, followed by Denzel.

Not heard of any of the foreign language films
Toni Erdmann has been on my list to watch for a while.

Have heard of A Man Called Ove but think it's no longer on release here as far as I am aware. I had heard it's good, so hopefully it will be shown at the cinema again.

Manchester By The Sea looks like the sort of unreconstructed Oscar bait that you'd have to pay me to watch. I'm sure it will clean up.

It's the film I'm looking forward to the most this year, because Kenneth Lonergan is the best and most nuanced writer of screenplays in the US today. He's become a very fine director as well. His two previous films were fucking amazing and both are among my favourite films of the last couple of decades. The reasons why his films are great are not easily summed up in a 2 min trailer.

After it looked that his last film Margaret may have been his last one because he stood his ground against the studio in a six year battle to get it released in his preferred version, I'm delighted that he is finally getting the recognition that he deserves.

Best picture nominees
  • Arrival
  • Fences
  • Hacksaw Ridge
  • Hell Or High Water
  • Hidden Figures
  • La La Land
  • Lion
  • Manchester By The Sea
  • Moonlight
I've yet to see Moonlight and Lion, but of those i have seen, I think Manchester by the Sea was the best.

I've been meaning to go and see Manchester by the Sea today because it only just came out in Germany, but I'm stuck at home filling in endless forms to sort out my health insurance. :(

Ove looks okay, but the least interesting of the five. The Salesman is another Asghar (A Seperation, The Past) Farhadi, so that should be cracking

Surprised Amy Adams missed out on a nomination, looks like Best Actress will be between Emma Stone and Isabelle Huppert, although I'd love Ruth Negga to get it too.

Yes, Amy Adams is the one surprise omission, she was widely tipped to be a front runner for Best Actress.

On the whole it's a better list of films than usual, even if there are never any true surprises. The critically acclaimed The Witch should have been in there for cinematography and art direction, but the Academy would never recognize a low budget horror film. The same goes for John Goodman in 10 Cloverfield Lane who I'd happily swap for at least two of the Best Actor nominees.

Amy Adams robbed. Meryl Streep doesn't need any more fucking Oscar nominations, no matter how good she was in whatever the hell it was she was in this time.

Speaking of the more unappreciated genre / popcorn end, Suicide Squad got a nom FFS :D (yes it's for Hair / Make-up and I'm sure those crew members did a great job, etc, but still, Civil War was an excellent blockbuster and got zilch recognition in any category).

I'm thinking some money might be wagered on Mahershala Ali getting best supporting actor, he's been brilliant in everything I've seen him in this year.

Streep got the nod for her GG speech, not her actuall acting. I thought AA was fine in Arrival, but not especially outstanding

And being an old hand at this game, I'm sure that wasn't an accident. FWIW I generally like her acting a lot but that speech was comfortably the hammiest performance of her career.

Star Trek Beyond nominated in the same category.

I wasn't a huge fan of ST Beyond, but hair and makeup were better from what I've seen than fucking Suicide Squat. It's a category where always a small number of the most obvious blockbuster and costume dramas get nominated, when really a lot of dramas who do more subtle work should be considered as should be some smaller horror films.

Jackie didn't even get a nom in that category, which is baffling.

I've switched off the Oscars since Mark Hamill was scandalously overlooked for his role in The Force Awakens tbh.

Better than Ewan MacGregor? Impossible
"Even the Younglings!" Another Oscar-deserving performance overlooked.
