I don't care so long as they're good and their style doesn't become an issue.

There is a woman on Radio 5 Live who does my head in though. She sounds as if she's in a Harry Potter film broadcasting a game of quiddritch.

The girl on match of the day was rubbish when she first started but is getting a lot better now. Still think she is by far the worst commentator i have heard not affiliated with channel 5 though.

Presenters are all good, i will quite happilly listen to what helen chamberlin, gabby yoreth, kelly dalglesih or kirsty gallacher have to say. They all know what they are on about.

Also is it or isn't it the case that women could play for a 'men's' team if they were good enough? It's happened in cricket.

nope. Some iltalian 2nd teir team(brescia????)_ tried to sign a women and were blocked by thier FA and uefa/fifa did nothing and as far as i know the same is true in this country.

I remember for my primary school team when we played in an fa sanctioned tournement we werent allowed to field our female player.

that sounds ace:D

watching match fo the day last night my boyfriend exclaimed 'what the hell is a woman doing commentating?!'

i wish i could say he was joking.

Had to vote no where I would normally vote 'dont care as long as they are good.'

On the 2 occasions this weekend where I heard a female commentator on football they were both really really bad. Like me trying to give birth, just no good at it so don't try.

Obviouly exception, but Im sure there is a gene thing going on.

I have no idea which one it was but the woman commentating on birmingham om motd on saturday was awful. I pefer not having to listen to someone squeaking when I'm watching football.

Yup she wasn't good -- but in terms of screeching was no worse than Alan Green or Mark Lawrenson -- and most commentators, in their early days, sound a bit odd. So I guess I don't mind. If we can have women chief executives, women prime ministers and women football agent, women football commentators shouldn't be hard to put up with.

Plenty of women watch MoTD, and can be equally as opinionated, ill-informed and irritating as blokes, so it's equal opportunities innit?

the woman on MOTD the other night had an irritating voice, but what she said was no worse than most of her male counterparts. motson has fantastic knowledge, but his voice is very annoying indeed.

tbh, i don't care about the gender as long as their voice doesn't distract from the game.

the only time I notice it is when a goal is scored

I'm yet to hear a woman scream "GOOOOAAALLLLL!!!!" and it not sound a little bit funny

To be honest, I haven't really liked a commentator since Barry Davies retired four years ago. He was knowledgeable and remained nice and calm, instead of the ridiculous hyperbole they all go for now, no matter how unremarkable the incident. The Davies line that's most remembered is after Maradona's second against England in 1986; "You have to say that's magnificent." Simple, short but perfect.

the woman on MOTD seemed to always be commentating about 2 seconds behind the play - so she'd say the players name just as it was passed to another player. she also noted the goal well after it had gone in - i guess thi will change in time as she gets more practised at it.
