Farnborough 1 Dulwich Hamlet 4. Saturday 10th October , 2015

The student prices was one of the major things for me to start following the Hamlet (and the sexy football obviously), after Fulham getting relegated and still wanting me to pay 30 odd pounds for games against Huddersfield, Blackpool and Bournemouth (no disrespect to any of the clubs mentioned!)

Although we do get branded as a "hipster" club and we aren't our cheap concessions are easily a contributing factors to some of our larger gates. Double the price for a away match on NLD just seems rather bollocks. Are the club doing anything at all for the event?

Funnily enough I felt the same about being asked to pay £30 for a game against Fulham tbh...

Been living out this way for years now so...

Many Farnborough fans have lost the will to watch the club under the current regime. Difficult to know which of the rumours are true but what is certain is that Farnborough have kept the local journalists busier off pitch than on the pitch in recent times. I doubt many home fans will show.

If you drive pay the two quid to park at the ground. Don't park on the estate close to the ground. There used to be an issue with cars getting vandalized. Don't know anyone living there now so not sure on whether this still happens but why risk it.

If walking from Farnborough North you can cut through Queen Elizabeth Country park onto Prospect Road. Not much quicker but nicer than walking along the A325. Check a map and you'll see the footpaths.

The Prince of Wales is the best pub by a country mile. The town centre Spoons is decent enough beer but a bland new build. The Thatched Cottage advertised a bit of a relaunch recently and either 5 or 7 handpumps. Not been since I moved from Cove but beer has always been ok - good in the past. Decent size garden there if it is sunny pre match. Nice building too.

A bunch of Boro fans used to drink in the Prince of Wales pre match if you want to meet some of their fans. Not sure how many do now as I know some of the group have relocated / stopped going. If you go to the PoW real ale fans should note the four guests on in the back bar as well as the five regulars facing you as you walk in. Look to the left as you face the main bar for a blackboard listing them all.

Illness permitting I hope to be at the game but regrettably have to skip the PoW post match as my home town ice hockey team are in Guildford at 18.00 so I'll be dashing over there.

Enjoy your day out here if you travel.

Those white shorts with the displeasingly pastel pink shirts are not to my liking. They should be black, say I.

As debuts go, Dan Sweeney's was about as good as they go. On another thread it suggested he was a defensive midfielder- well today he certainly wasn't. He got forward and was the main creator. A brilliant signing IMHO.

Excellent first half - completely in control and after the third went in thought we would really push on and hammer them. However after they got one back we looked pretty shaky for the next 20mins and if they had scored another (or Pinnock had been sent for his 'last man' foul - couldn't really see whether it was or not as it was down the far end) it could have been a nervous finish. After we weathered that storm we were pretty comfortable for the last 10 and the debut goal for Sweeney at the end capped off a decent away performance.
Sweeney looks an excellent signing - is a big guy and is very strong on the ball and plays it nice and simple. Considering he went straight into the team a day after joining I was impressed with how well he slotted in. Thought Waldren was better today and he scored an excellent header. Jordan Brown has also fitted in nicely at left back and delivers an excellent ball - think the first two goals came from his crosses.
Up to second and can go top if we win on Tuesday as Leiston aren't playing till Wednesday.
Should mention that Charlie Penny got two on debut for Merstham so hopefully he can get some games under his belt and come back in form if we need him in a few months.

The Farnborough fans were impressed by Hamlet:

No complaints about today's result. Simply beaten by a better, stronger, bigger and organised side that controlled the game from the outset.

Our lads gave their all, and I can't knock any of them for effort, but they just couldn't break them down, and the score was a fair result in the end.

Shame about losing Broadbent early on, as their big no.9 was causing huge problems, all day, and we could have done with Tom's strength to counter it.

Saying that though, we did get at them for a short while in the second half, scored one and had a couple of deflections that could have made the score interesting!! but they got bodies in the way and took control again and saw the game out.

I think Dulwich are probably the most 'complete' side that I have seen this season, and must surely be Champions elect, even now!

They just oozed Conf South, or even higher, standard.

Just shows what a bit of cash, and 900+ plus through the gates every week, can do!!

Jealous?? What do you think?

Oh well. Onwards and upwards.

COME ON YOU YELLOWWSSAA!!
By far the best side we've faced this season so no complaints with the result. Our goal was a result of Dulwich taking their foot off rather than our dominance, although another goal would've been interesting to see how they reacted.

I expect they'll be up there at the end of the season, don't quite agree with Bob in that conf south will be there level. Their forwards would struggle in higher divisions IMHO.

Also Dulwich fans superb, about time we had an opposing crowd!

No doubt Spencer will raise what he feels was a red card (it was the most animated he got all game) in his post match interview, was never in a month of Sunday's a red card.

It's very had to watch and muster any enthusiasm for the Boro at the moment, it's been great creating atmospheres but it's all a bit forced and hard going at times. The players need to take some responsibility but I'd love to see Spencer come out and say hands up I got that wrong or show some accountability.

Their fans seemed a nice enough bunch but I hated their wanky stewards. Twats.

Fair play to the ten or so of them at the back of the main stand. They were doing well making some noise up there all game. The ground is comically OTT for the amount of people in there though.

I thought today was another good performance against another poor team. The test will come when we play the better teams but I do think the team is coming together now with Erskine back up front, and with Sweeney coming in and doing well. Looking much more balanced than a few weeks ago.

Good performance bar that shaky spell mid way through the 2nd half. Confidence high. Sweeney excellent. Beat waldren performance yet I think.

First half was best performance I've seen for a while and I think Farnborough had prepared for the usual two wingers. They seemed to take an eternity to do anything about it. Good debut from Sweeney who looked very tidy.
Feel sorry for the Farnborough fans - stuck in that ridiculous ground with ridiculous stewards. Wouldn't mind not going back next season. Farnborough is the new Harrow away day.
Concerned about Drage being an unused sub. Don't know what that's all about.

Yeah, I think he looks much better in a three man midfield. In the early games there was just him and Ash and it asked a bit much of him. He couldn't really get forward and whenever he was out of position we were a bit exposed. Bringing Kevin James back in and now Sweeney I think lets him play his natural game a bit more.

Same as last week I think. Someone has to lose out - we know Gavin likes a more experienced defender in there so that's Sankofa, and he seems to have decided to go for regular fullbacks rather than playing one of the centre backs out wide (which is a good call IMO - Brown has done really well and is creating a lot going forward). So it's him or Ethan which is a tight call. And there doesn't seem much point bringing a centre back on as sub in a game like that once the decision has been made. It's a good situation really although you wonder how long he'll hang about if he's not playing.

Going by his performances this season he'd be first name on my teamsheet every time.

They gave the attendance as 456, which is a lot more than I'd have estimated. Then again it's going to look sparse in such a ridiculously oversized ground. When Farceborough were attacking the big end (oo-er) there were about seventy people in a 1,000 seater stand behind the goal. I'm also surprised they have a ground grading with fences so low along the sides that you can just step over in places.

It's a toss up whether they or VCD are the poorest side I've seen so far. First half was very one sided as a comfortable lead was established. A pair of great crosses from the left by the overlapping Brown led to Scannell slamming in a simple chance from inside the six yard box, and Waldren netting with a fine header that flew in just below the crossbar. It seemed that one more goal would put the game to bed, and it arrived shortly after half time when Scannell shook off his marker with the aid of a crafty shove on the corner of the box, cut inside, and was flattened by a crude body-check from another defender who just stepped in front of him. Carew did the honours from the spot with a firm strike into the top corner. Suddenly we had a real wobble as Farnborough pulled a goal back after we'd wasted several opportunities to clear an attack properly, and within a minute they attacked us again and a forward was felled right on the edge of the box. The referee was a long way behind the play and sprinted towards the incident so vigorously it seemed as if he'd given a penalty and was going to show Pinnock the red card, but fortunately it was only a yellow card and a free kick right on the edge of the box. Our opponents had a couple more chances to close the gap, but Hamlet weathered the storm, and after the three substitutions were made we added a fourth goal just before stoppage time when Hibbert's cross from the right found Sweeney and his shot took a big deflection to leave the keeper helpless.

I thought Hibbert was pretty unlucky to be dropped for Sweeney as he felt he was our best performer against VCD. Having players like him and Drage on the bench demonstrates the depth of quality in our squad; and we still have Clunis, Jarrett, Dixon, McDonald and Campbell out injured, with Penny out on loan. One or two of those are going to struggle to get back in again.

Team (4-2-3-1): Wilson - Nelson, Sankofa, Pinnock, J.Brown - Carew, Waldren(c) - Scannell, Sweeney, Murrell-Williamson - Erskine.
Subs: Hibbert (for Erskine), Willock (for Scannell), Mascoll (for Murrell-Williamson), Drage, Fernandes (not used). Attendance: 456

As Pink Panther alludes to above I struggle to see how Dicko and Campbell will get back in the side. Deano Macca has played well and he was brought in to make up the numbers when we were light but again I can't see him being an integral part of the team. Albert's been very unlucky with his injury as he was doing ok but again I feel this really is a make or break season for him and if he doesn't have a strong second half of the season then I can't see him being next year (if he lasts that long).

Drage that is.

Totally agree. I think his performances have dropped slightly recently - he was at fault for the goal v Staines last week and it was his wayward pass that led to Hampton's first goal too, so perhaps that's why he's been dropped out the XI recently. All the same I think he's as good as Ethan is. It feels very odd to say it given that he's played in the Premier League and for England Under 20s, but I think Sankofa is the one who should make way. He's very, very good, but I think Drage and Pinnock is a formidable partnership, albeit a very young one as Monkeygrinder pointed out. I'm also under the impression that Drage is under contract, so hopefully that seriously reduces the chance of him departing mid-season if this stint on the bench continues.

This is a lovely conundrum to have though isn't it? This sort of selection crisis reminds me why I was so excited during pre season and since then we've gone on to sign a rejuvenated McDonald, Dan Sweeney, RM-W and Jordan Brown as well. It's an incredibly strong squad once everyone returns (although one that could still do with a Makelele in the middle, I think - maybe that's what Sweeney is). I think Mascoll and Fernandes are the first two that should make way. Maybe a loan spell at Whyteleafe or Walton Casuals would do them good. Like you though Al, I fear for Dixon and Campbell especially now we've signed Sweeney and Brown. I hope they stay but I wonder if a departure or two will be announced soon.
