Facebook are evil

In case you haven't already done this, please disconnect activity tracking on Facebook otherwise they will track everything you do off FB.

1 Go to FB settings (find it on your own page)
2 Scroll down to "Off-Facebook Activity"
3 Login to Accounts Center
4 Clear previous activity
5 After that, click Manage future activity > Disconnect future activity

tweet shared on bluesky saying she found facebook had details of banking information, credit card and ovulation tracking details, and showing how to disconnect the activity tracking function

ETA IMPORTANT to go through all steps. I had No Recent Activity recorded but then still had to select "Manage future activity" and uncheck the permission. I thought I had done that on a previous occasion but suspect that simply engaging with the Off-Facebook Activity setting re-sets it.

Which bit of the instructions don't work, or do you mean all of it because you've left the swamp?

I know it's evil but I still use FB to keep in touch with people who share a common interest and would otherwise be too scattered to follow. There's no other common platform we all use. Many of us are on Bluesky but most still use FB as the main talking shop.

Reluctantly coming round to the idea that it's time to ditch Facebook. Will lose touch with even more friends, but will have to suck it up or carry on enabling fascism. Social media used to be my haven and the most ideally suited medium for communicating with friends. However, I feel like I've put all my eggs in one basket, the basket has been dashed to the ground and abandoned and no there's nowhere to go but further and further into my hermit's grotto. Bleak. Better make sure that cave has cental heating.

:(

does blooksi work for you? it was kinda quiet in the early days, but is a fair bit busier now.

For now face book is still a lefty woke bubble for me.
All the facebook snooping is as deactivated as I can make it and I make sure I delete any sponsored content or suggestions whenever I see them. This seems to keep them at bay and confuse whatever algorithm throws them up. They are quite minimal, but used to be a dreadful pain.
I don't do this using my band profile (because I don't use it much) and when I am on there it's an unusable mess. Feed full to the brim with nothing but bullshit, no content by friends or followers, just wall to wall adverts.

not that i'm aware of. i've never done farcebook - i try to make sure my real name doesn't appear in print or on the interwebs, and tend to be happy keeping different batches of family / friends / work colleagues firmly separate.
I keep them separate too. Have never accepted friend requests from in-laws or colleagues. Gotta compartmentalise!

It's certainly become massively enshittified. I find every time I go onto farcebook these days I have to go to the Feed option and select Friends, to have a hope of seeing anything remotely up to date or relevant. Otherwise it always defaults to a firehose of drivel, some of it days old. Even with feed from Friends selected, there is still a steady intrusion of sponsored posts and group posts (things like old photos or architecture) that look interesting using genuine material, but run by AI and harvesting info from Likes.

ETA Someone was telling me about F.B.Purity as a way of cleaning up but I haven't looked into it yet. Seems promising but I need to check the downsides. (I already use Adblock plus.)

This is the writeup - sorry for the length I thought I'd copy all of it. Only the first dozen lines are really relevant for what it does I think.
How does it work?
When you first install this extension, it will close your Facebook tabs, delete your Facebook cookies and log you out of Facebook.
The next time you navigate to Facebook, the site will load in a new tab. The tab is coloured blue to indicate you are in the container.
You can log in and use Facebook as you normally do when in the Facebook Container. If you click on a non-Facebook link or navigate to a non-Facebook website in the URL bar, these pages will load outside of the container.
Clicking Facebook Share buttons on other browser tabs will load them within the Facebook Container. You should know that using these buttons passes information to Facebook about the website that you shared from.

Which features will not function on other websites?
Because you will be logged into Facebook only in the container, embedded Facebook comments and Like buttons in tabs outside the container will not work. This prevents Facebook from associating information about your activity on websites outside of Facebook with your Facebook identity.

In addition, websites that allow you to create an account or log in using your Facebook credentials will generally not work properly. Because this extension is designed to separate Facebook use from use of other websites, this behavior is expected.

What does Facebook Container NOT protect against?
It is important to know that this extension doesn’t prevent Facebook from mishandling the data that it already has, or permitted others to obtain, about you. Facebook will still have access to everything that you do while you are on facebook.com, including your Facebook comments, photo uploads, likes, any data you share with Facebook connected apps, etc.

Rather than stop using a service you find valuable, we think you should have tools to limit what data others can obtain. This extension focuses on limiting Facebook tracking, but other ad networks may try to correlate your Facebook activities with your regular browsing. In addition to this extension, you can change your Facebook settings, use Private Browsing, block trackers and block third-party cookies, and use the Firefox Multi-Account Containers extension to further limit tracking.

What data does Mozilla receive from this extension?
Mozilla does not collect data from your use of the Facebook Container extension. We do receive the number of times the extension is installed or removed. Learn more

Other Containers
Facebook Container leverages the Containers feature that is already built into Firefox. When you enable Facebook Container, you may also see Containers named Personal, Work, Shopping and Banking whilst you browse. If you wish to use multiple Containers, you’ll have the best user experience if you install the Firefox Multi-Account Containers extension. Learn more on our support site.

Known issues
When Facebook is open and you navigate to another website using the same tab (by entering an address, doing a search or clicking a bookmark), the new website will be loaded outside of the Container and you will not be able to navigate back to Facebook using the back button in the browser.

NOTE: If you are a Multi-Account Containers user who has already assigned Facebook to a Container, this extension will not work. In an effort to preserve your existing Container set-up and logins, this add-on will not include the additional protection to keep other sites out of your Facebook Container. If you would like this additional protection, first unassign facebook.com in the Multi-Account Container extension, and then install this extension.

What version of Firefox do I need for this?
This extension works with Firefox 57 and higher on desktop. Note that it does not work on other browsers and it does not work on Firefox for mobile.

If you believe you are using Firefox 57+, but the install page is telling you that you are not on a supported browser, you can try installing by selecting or copying and pasting this link: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/...-container/platform:2/addon-954390-latest.xpi. (This may be occurring because you have set a preference or installed an extension that causes your browser to obscure its user agent for privacy or other reasons.)

How does this compare to the Firefox Multi-Account Containers extension?
Facebook Container specifically isolates Facebook and works automatically. Firefox Multi-Account Containers is a more general extension that allows you to create containers and determine which sites open in each container.

You can use Multi-Account Containers to create a container for Facebook and assign facebook.com to it. Multi-Account Containers will then make sure to only open facebook.com in the Facebook Container. However, unlike Facebook Container, Multi-Account Containers doesn’t prevent you from opening non-Facebook sites in your Facebook Container. So users of Multi-Account Containers need to take a bit of extra care to ensure they leave the Facebook Container when navigating to other sites. In addition, Facebook Container assigns some Facebook-owned sites like Instagram and Messenger to the Facebook Container. With Multi-Account Containers, you will have to assign these in addition to facebook.com.

Facebook Container also deletes Facebook cookies from your other containers on install and when you restart the browser, to clean up any potential Facebook trackers. Multi-Account Containers does not do that for you.

Anyone who goes through my post history, knows I work for Meta (Facebook).

I am "Consumer Content Administrative Manager". My primary duties include content appeals, account appeals, account reviews, and some peer review.

It is no surprise that my job depends on people using Facebook. Today, I am going to suggest, you not do so. I can make that suggestion because we have a user base of billions, and I know most people would keep using Facebook even if the Devil ran the company. People are strange.

But if you feel you can truly live without Facebook, do so. Internally, things are changing, and not for the better. You should especially consider leaving Meta if you are a minority, woman, LGBTQ+, trans, or identify as progressive, politically. If facts matter to you, and misinformation is something you do not want to be subject toward, you should especially consider leaving, Facebook.

You have no privacy from Meta, while using Meta. None. I do not care if you believe you disabled a "feature" or "opt out" of something. You only seem to have done so. And even if you're going to continue to use Meta, uninstall the app (all of them). We collect data on you, even when you're not using the app.

Putting the data protections on and deleting about five or ten targeted sponsors a day seems to keep things at bay.
I've just been over to my band page which is overrun by football and sports for some reason. Maybe because I never interact with it and it doesn't know what to do. I think I've just given it a load of hints and it has cleared some shit out to reveal a few useful band / venue/ promotion posts. I might persevere and clear more weeds away each day.

There’s no alternative to Facebook as far as I can tell
Can you not just print out some pictures of a holiday abroad you had 10 years ago, and stick some heart and thumb emojis on them, then stick them up on the walls around your house, and look at them every day to see if any new hearts or thumbs have appeared?

Why would I want to do that?
It provides an authentic Facebook experience, without feeling obliged to reply to an awkward message from someone you thought you'd blocked 5 years ago.
If you need even more realism, tear the first 10 pages from a book, and leave them at the bottom of a drawer, so you can happen upon them one day and read them, then you can go searching for the the rest of the book.

You'd need to include (from what I've heard :) ) several hundred pages of advertisements for face cream, pedicures, fascist websites and Trump bitcoins for the authentic feel though.

It’s also a platform for friends to keep in touch and plan social events. It’s a shame that’s now mostly gone
