What the fuck is a style bar? Doesn't sound promising.

I think "style bar" is a generic term for another upmarket, bland, overpriced trendy bar aimed at the type of people that many on here keep slagging off for gentrifying the neighbourhood.

Giles..

Well craigeboy, Lose the exterior ghastliness sharpish, like....it looks like something out of a horror film........and I'm afraid the DJ's may put people off....we want decent cheap beer and decent cheap pub grub. And I like spotless loos.......

Good for you. Hope it works out.

Thanks for the update sun man, it's good to hear that things are still progressing and not just ground to a halt. Really looking forward to the Warrior becoming a pub again - I promise to bring in some custom!

Is the plan still for some sort of clinic on the ground floor of the Green Man?

Have you heard anything definite about the old Harriers or is it just an assumption that it'll be a 'style bar'? I had been trying to get in touch with the developers but the original applicants (Mount Anvil - also doing the key worker accomodation at the Camberwell end of CHL) have sold it on I think, and I haven't found out to whom.

Fingers crossed for your contract negotiations.

Craigeboy - sorry to forget about The Coast bar, TBH I've never been in. Must rectify that. Especially if it'll encourage a repaint of the outside!

I LIved on Hinton Road when it closed. The owner who was pretty cool died. The drinks were cheap...he let us bring our own cds over. We really missed that classic boozer.
I may have seen you in the Lord Stanley! I used to go there despite living opposite the Cambria as it was a top pub with decent ales.

The Coast Bar always looked so tacky and it didn't do any ales, but it was great for watching football in.

Did I see metal hoardings around the Warrior yesterday? Does mean that the problems are out of the way and the work has started?

If so - three cheers!

I also note activity in the hole-in-the-ground that is the site next to the Spice cafe (?) takeaway; where the hoardings have gone a fetching shade of pink.

Rebuild the Junction!

Yes, that was well annoying, sort it aht craigeboy polease!

And sunman -- why not get some good ale in to your new place -- it might well if sold in lovely nick, cause the word to spread, then custom will be up ...

The Harriers forcibly closed and then (in what seems like overkill!) razed and reduced to a hole in the ground

Quite frankly I'm glad the Harrier was "forcibly" closed. It was a well known trouble spot, with several shootings happening in and around the pub. The last double fatal shooting (around June last year) closed it forever.

Having said that though, I don't much like the idea of a fanci dan restaurant/wine bar on the site!

Elaine

As I've said elsewhere I had afew good nights in the Harriers. While not being naive about gun violence I think it's important that people realise afew roughneck punters do not always equal a bad pub or bad landlord. People should speak from experience of the place. (I'm not saying you don't Elaine).

:)

Update (things move slowly in these parts...): The holeinthegroundthatwastheharriers has just been sold at auction (for £795) to person or persons unknown. The original plans are still current, but note this from the catalogue entry:
"We are advised that the Planning Authority has indicated that if after six months marketing a suitable occupier has not been found for the commercial element then favourable consideration will be given to its conversion to fll residential use"
(see http://www.eigroup.co.uk/auctioneer...22&a=2&c=and&r=3&fc=ffffff&bc=0098D1&l=421702 and click on 'catalogue entry').

I'm supposed to be on the Planning Depts mailing list about this site, but I've heard nowt for years so who knows... I looked this up on the basis of a big 'Auction' sign on the site itself.

Anyone have any information? the Land registry will eventually record who the new owners are but it will take a while...

Don't start me on that big hole in the ground....

It's now a flooded hole in the ground.

I've emailed my labour councillor, Kirsty McHugh several times before about this. I had a number of replies in the run up to the elections, but nothing since. Draw your own conclusions.

I too saw that deal that if the cafe bit wasn't let, then planning permission would be considered for residential. What is it about that that makes me think that we'll see residential units there 'ere long.

I can't help think that the whole thing has something not quite right written over it.

My uncle used to own the Joiner's Arms in Camberwell.
I believe it was affectionately called "the sweeney pub" by the locals, due the the decor.
Unfortunaltey he died of cancer and the pub was sold on. Havent been into it since the purple phase. Still has the Joiners Arms name board over the door.

while we're (back) on the subject of ex-boozers in the area, i thought i'd mention the Loughborough Hotel on Loughborough Road (just near Jamm off Brixton Road). it would be my local..it's about 2 mins from my house...but it's been shut for a while now, maybe two years? It's a proper huge decent building, really beautiful, a spacious pub. they had an upstairs bar & performance room and everything. shame it's not open now. The back area and the upstairs of the pub are currently being converted into flats, but it looks like the front bit of the pub will remain a pub - it's up for rent/sale as a pub/restaurant....the bar and even the beer taps are still there! There's still hope perhaps...

I remember going to couple of squat parties in that place.

Nice squat parties full of hippies who actually lived there, rather than the "we broke in yesterday, lets wreck the place" type.

It is a lovely, really big bar/venue.

I hope it does re-open as a pub/bar/restaurant.

Only problem I can always see with this business of making flats out of the upper floors is that the presence of unrelated people above the "pub" would limit what kind of a venue it could be - unless they go to town on the soundproofing.

The top half of the Green Man has now all polished up and advertising its "Luxury 1 & 2 Bedroom Flats" for rent.

While the pub bit at the bottom still looks a dump :(

If I remember there was never a plan to re-open the Green Man as a pub - they were looking for some other commercial use for the ground floor - a shop or something.

It was implied that the other pub (Warrior / Junction) would be re-opened as a pub.

Giles..

The inside of the Green Man's ground floor hasn't had any attention yet, I wonder if they'll be able to sell the flats above for a high price while that situation continues. With the volume of traffic on the junction and it's previous reputation they could be struggling, despite how much it's calmed down.
The Junction (visible in the far background of Editor's top photo) is nearly finished. Looks nice on the inside, but slightly incongruous amongst it's shabby neighbours. Some poor design means that from the front all you can see is an odd, angular bin area. No idea what the ground floor will be used for, but a pub would welcome, if risky, given the decline of all the others in the area.
Not convinced the developers are going to get rich from these, but the high demand for flats might mean they'll get away with it.

The reason for this is, I suspect, that what commercial tenants want from a "space" varies a lot depending on what type of business or organisation is going to use it.

So spending money generically "doing it up" is likely to be money wasted if the incoming business promptly rip out most of what you've just paid for in order to "do it their way".

Giles..

It looks the the frontage of the Green Man is in the process of being carefully restored back to what looks like how it might have looked in the 1940s/50s.

The 'orrible green paint has been scraped off to reveal the original tiled facade, with even the original pub name reappearing.

Lovely innit. I was keeping an eye on the original Green Man pub sign for a long time, hoping to liberate it when they took it down. Sadly I missed it and I expect it got skipped.
The Jack Beard pub on the corner of Camberwell Station Road and Camberwell New Road is getting a full refit at the mo too.

It's only when you see the original frontage you realise how fucking awful it used to look before it closed!

She scrubs up quite well doesn't she? What morons think gloss paint looks good over tiling? Pff.

To be honest though, I thought we'd seen the last of it.

Hows the Warrior coming along?
