Electronic Body Music/Belgian New Beat

sorry to give this a bit of a bump so late in the day :p but partly inspired by this thread i've been listening once again to some of this stuff, and for various reasons (stress of living in the 21st century innit?) never got round to posting up what i meant to before. :(

main omission i can see (unless i've missed it coz i'm a twat) is major problem 'acid queen' - a proper durtee filthy sex tune with a great nasty little needling 303 hook and scummy porno samples.

i'd also recommend checking out the morton sherman bellucci 'beat the box' compilation. there's some real tacky shite on there (tho tackiness was always part of the new beat fun imo), but side 2 is all stuff using 'mystere des voix bulgares' samples and some of it is absolutely magical. special honours to bulgarka 'musica' and, the winner imo, trio balkana 'lalala', slow spiralling solar blissed out narcotic loveliness.

i've been puzzled for years as to why this genre hasn't been revitalised, ironically or otherwise, but a few weeks back when in sister ray's i got a brilliant ep that's the first thing i've heard that actually does refer to and breathe new life into new beat, namely the stunning 'black devil disco' ep. in particular i'm thinking of the tracks 'free for the girls' and 'never no dollars' (if you want to check em out on d/l sites, like).

that is all. :)

I haven't heard that one yet, but their Black Devil Disco Club In Dub from last year was ace. Great live too.

So have I :)

Twitch by Ministry has been one of my most played albums of the last month. That's a great album, coming between their early Depeche Mode influenced early stuff and their how-extreme-can-we-be later stuff, catching that mid-80s EBM industrial dance proto-techno sound

Another EBM-style act I've been listening to is Severed Heads. They started as an industrial act in the late 70s, but moved through synth-pop to EBM later in the 80s. Dead Eyes Open and Greater Reward are both great tracks.

what would you call this?
Lhasa came from the New Beat scene. Dark Entries records have just repressed their first EP from '88:

The Attic is an awesome tune. It's on the first Logic Trance compilation and catches the point where New Beat turned into the earliest kind of trance. I love that stuff
