Electronic Body Music/Belgian New Beat

Orang Utan

Psychick Worrier Ov Geyoor
The industrial thread made me think this needs a thread of its own. It influenced so much - it led me and many others to techno and rave music, yet no-one seems to mention it much these days.
Here's a great contemporary radio show that played it:

Thanks for that, i must buy some discs tomorrow and burn this stuff

Thanks LTC

I remember a tune from that period which simply featured a voice / vocal line which stated 'This is the sound of New Beat'. Does anyone know what this might have been?

EBM and Belgium New Beat are quite different, it's confusing to refer to them as one entitiy.

But yeah nice one for stating a thread as it's an often overlooked genre of electronic music.

Yes, but people like both and they often end up in mixes together

They kind of come from the same place, the dancier side of 80s industrial (isn't New Beat often said to have started when some DJ played Flesh by A Split Second at the wrong speed?) but went in pretty different directions.

EBM in the late 80s/early 90s went a rockier route, while New Beat eventually turned into euro-dance; Technotronic, of Pump Up the Jam fame, were originally a New Beat act.

Actually, that applies to me as well. It was EBM that opened my mind to dancing to electronic music after being into punk/goth/indie and paved the way for me getting into techno/raves/free parties. But once I was into the dance scene in the early 90s I pretty quickly stopped listenning to all that gloomy, angsty stuff cos the music I'd just got into was so much more fun, exciting and interesting.

I guess that's part of the reason it gets forgotten about; in 91/92/93 much of it's audience dropped it like a brick once they discovered raves and never looked back.

Also it rarely gets a mention in the Official story of post 87 dance music, which would have you think it ALL started in Chicago, Detroit and New York, often overlooking the Belgian, Italian and Dutch influences.

PWOG were  Ov Biospheres and Sacred Grooves is still one of my fave techno albums.

I've been listening to their last album again lately 'Record of Breaks', the first track, A Kind of Prayer, is still doing it for me, that bass line...
They started out as the Katharos Foundation afaik, on an industrial/ebm tip. (KK Records being Belgian)

new beat was awesome... my knowledge of it is incredibly sketchy (mainly informed by a couple of compilations i've found over the years), but that miss nicky trax seems to be involved with the best stuff...
