Elder Scrolls IV - Oblivion

Check out the videos on their website. Absolutely fucking amazing visuals, ridiculously in-depth gameplay, a graphics engine that defies the imagination and Patrick Stewart... what more could you possibly want?

To tell the truth great visuals really don't mean much to me with games: its just the icing on the cake. For example fallout, baldur's gate and alpha centauri, halflife 1 & deus ex 1 all still great games despite having relatively dated graphics whereas this last year has seen quite a few disappointing games with admittedly brilliant graphics, but which have often been very tired, uninspiring repeats, dumbed down (often for cross-platform purposes) but wrapped in lens flair, water reflections and high detail textures.

I always wait to see what the actual game is like in reality and as played by the gaming community when it comes out rather than relying on the developers and journalists saying that it is going to be the 'next big thing' in gaming (they say this about absolutely everything - its part of their job).

Not talking about the graphics, talking about the graphics engine, and more specifically how it's implemented in the game (check out the videos). And of course games companies say their games are 'next-gen' it's just that Bethesda tend to be telling the truth... Morrowind was an absolute masterpiece.

It was except for the combat play, which was repetitive and often clumsy - I hope they sort this out with Oblivion.

Well ya can't have everything...

But in case anyone's worried... the map is 16 square miles, half of it covered by proceduraly generated forest (ie the forest is generated in real-time by the game), all animated with interactive plants, huntable animals etc. combat system works on how long you hold down the attack button (there's also a controllable block now), the direction you 'push the stick' (I suppose with a PC this will be the mouse) and character stats. As well as that there're stealth attacks etc and you can trigger your enemies traps so they work for, rather than against you. Watch the videos - it really is rather staggering.

I......must.....have.......that.....game.

If it gets endlessly pushed back (a la S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Shadow of Chernobyl) I shall be most vexed.

Oh yeah - the game uses 'radiant ai' - ie the NPCs 'live' 24/7, make their own choices, eat, teach themselves skills, use potions, have pets etc etc. Quests can be picked up by overhearing conversations etc, characters react with changes of facial expression... It's pretty fucking amazing.

The game isn't out yet. All this "it's amazing" stuff is just coming from their marketing department ffs! Yes, I hope it is a good game but how on earth do you know that it will actually live up to all this hype?

It's Bethesda. They're improving Morrowind. It would be very, very hard for them to go wrong (especially looking at screenshots, physics demonstrations etc).

Then saith he to Thomas, Reach hither thy finger, and behold my hands; and reach hither thy hand, and thrust it into my side: and be not faithless, but believing.

You may say that, but this is bethesda with a better development team. If they get this right this will be the best game of the decade. If they get this wrong this will be the best game of the year.

dunno, it'll have some hefty competition with STALKER - let's just say best RPG.

I'm really looking forward to this. I've just recently started playing Morrowind again during the time off I had over Christmas.

It's the first time I've played it in ages and since I got a decent graphics card. It really is a fantastic game and all signs point to Oblivion being that much better.

This will be my excuse for a 360 too :)
Only annoying thing about tthe engine for oblivion is that it still makes a hard distinction between 'indoors' and 'outdoors' areas. Means no peering through windows and limited architecture.
But fuck that - I must have wasted 100s of hours on morrowind - I can't wait. This should be the only game I need till Xmas.

Given that i'm still playing Morrowind years later (currently an 11th level Breton alchemist-type character), this game will probably ruin my life. It's got Sean Bean in it too apparently.

Thing is, even though there's this fantastic Draedic Dai-Katana that you can find in one of the early dungeons, which does 50 damage (or summat) at a whack, and therefore lets you kill pretty much everything really easily - I still spent ages wandering around doing side quests, collecting armour etc. Seems I'll be doing the same with this one :) Maybe I'll try being a different character class this time...

OK, I'm bumping this thread reather than starting a new one.

The game is now out (more or less - depends on postage and shipping by the look of it on other UK gaming forums) so I wanna know...

...who's got it, how does it run on their pc (what specs) and... well just all about it really (although maybe give a *spoiler* warning if you are going to give away any cool plot twists and surprises).

I have prepared Agent Sparrow for the worst. This game is going to ruin my life like a crack addiction and it will be fantastic :)

Very good looking, fairly performance hungry. The autodetect chose ultrahigh for my system.

4400X2 @ 2.5Ghz
2GB RAM
7800GT @ GTX speeds

But even the intro was dropping too many frames to be pleasant, i only popped into the game briefly before PRoD but i'll see what sort of RAM useage and if it really does use the second core in a minute.

Well i've played it for a bit, my RAM useage hit 950MB so the odds are that if you play on moderate settings 1GB will be enough. There are some tweaks for the game that i'll try tomorrow, as well as turning down the quality settings for more fps.

I've had nothing but trouble on my machine.

Soundblaster Audigy2 Platinum eX
GeForce 6600GT
1 Gig Ram
2.08 Ghz

It took me stacks of tweaking just to get past the character creation screen and now it keeps crashing after about ten minutes play.

I've tried everything from replacing all drivers, disabling sound, lowest settings, etc but it still fucks up.

There are nothing but really angry customers on the offical boards.

See here .

Bah, just waiting on a patch now. :(

Going out to get this in a few hours, my system isn't even close to the specs you guys have so I am a little worried this won't even run on my machine.

You may be ok as others with lowers specs are running it with no problems.

It seems to be a problem with creative soundcards amongst other things.

I suspect there is some kind of memory leak problem too.

It's just fine on my machine (Athlon64 3500, 1Gb, ATI 9800pro) and yes it's beautiful :) - I've picked a fairly heavy magic using character, but one of the stronger races (forget which) so I'm handy with a sword. Oh and lockpick skill. Long white hair in a ponytail and a thin face - just in case I fancy being a vampire later on.

Is looking beautiful on my PC (creative soundcard doesn't seem to be causing problem).
Just wandering around exploring it's worth the £30.
Still have to decide what character though , trying to decide between 3 I've played a bit with :)
fighter with some healing/mystic powers, thief-type with a nice line in poisoned arrows, or an all-out mage.

To be honest a full on magic seems to kick serious ass. Hard to see how warrior can compete.

Too right. With recharging magicka, you can just sit there healing yourself if need be. Can't be beat for ranged attacks either :) I'm going to do some alchemy in this one too, as I never got into it on Morrowind.

I've brought the dvd into work so I can play at lunchtime
