Egypt anti-government protests grow

http://www.guardian.co.uk/global/blog/2011/jan/25/middleeast-tunisia

1.33pm:
Another update from Cairo from Jack Shenker:

Reports spreading of protesters attacking the council of ministers building downtown, while several thousands are marching towards Mubarak's presidential palace in Heliopolis. In Dar El Salaam, a densely-populated neighbourhood in southern Cairo, demonstrators claim they have taken over the police station.
There's a feeling of intense excitement on the streets here in Shubra, northern Cairo, as the police continue to stand back and allow protesters to pass - but some of the security forces are wearing bullet proof vests, and some fear this is the calm before the storm.
One former television news presenter told me she hadn't seen anything like this since 1977, when an uprising over bread prices almost brought down the government of President Sadat. But demonstrations remain cut off from each other and it's still too early to say how this will play out

Here's hoping the Mubarak regime is severely rotten on the inside and will come tumbling down.

Let's hope these dominoes fall straight, and fast ...

C'mon Egypt!

It's certainly very corrupt and nepotistic, and has been propped up by US cash for years. also, mubarak is 82, and in ill-health. The army's reaction will be key

Hasn't the regime and the army been symbiotic since Nasser? Although I wonder what the effect of 30 years of intense US aid has been on the military... Not necessarily softened them up, just look at Pakistan.

Just spoke to a lass in Hurghada who said it is really odd over there right now.
She is pretty excited and said that tomorrow Hurghada will follow Cairo's lead.

less so under Mubarak, who has never been idolised like Nasser was (altho he also came up via the forces). he buys the top brass's loyalty, but has little or no connection with the ranks. Also, the v large conscript element in the army (it's cheaper to conscript egypt's unemployed than pay benefits) are a huge potential source of unrest

Fingers crossed, then

Police are using tear gas and water cannon in Tahrir Square centre of Cairo. Ten thousand demonstrators in the square by all accounts. Also numerous demonstrations across Cairo.

In Cairo's Tahrir Square, protesters have attacked a police armored vehichle that was firing tear gas canisters, says Ahram Online reporter. Another reporter confirms more clashes taking place in Sayyeda Zeinab.

4:19 PM More protests in Mahalla break out in Mahgoub Square. Some factory workers from Ghazl el-Mahalla join the protest. In Shubra, prominent leftist Mohamed Waked has been detained. In Tahrir Square, more than 20 protesters arrested.

4:20 PM An Ahram Online reporter describes the area in front of the Mogamaa Tahrir as a "war zone" with protesters throwing rocks at the police, amid water cannons and tear gas.

Demonstrations in Alexandria now 20.000 strong. Images of Mubarak being burnt.

There are also reports of twitter being blocked across Egypt

4:31 PM Protesters topple and roll over a police truck in Qasr El Aini Street. Stone throwing battles continue.

Heavy stuff coming in in next two hours i think.

I think Tahrir square is going to be the battleground. Thousands of demonstrators are heading there from all over Cairo and there are calls on twitter for people to head there. The crowd in Tahrir is 20.000 strong and growing and is fighting a pitched battle with cops for possession of the square right now.

Allegedly Tahrir Sq is in the hands of the protesters, for time being...heard Twitter down in Egypt now from several sources

5:25 PM Several protesters have been injured in the Tahrir clashes, as demonstrators try to storm the parliament, says Ahram Online reporter

Now we'll see whose got what.
