Dulwich v Dover, Boxing Day 2022

What better way to shake off the Christmas hangover with a trip to Champion Hill.

Dover had a reputation at the start of the season as having a pretty unpleasant element in their travelling support, but haven't heard anything recently so hopefully that's not going to be a thing.

'Tickets selling fast' according to club twitter...

Looks like some of the "unpleasant element has made its way to the game. Although possible he's not a Dover fan given his comments elsewhere. He's putting out some pretty unpleasant tweets, this the least among them

Good half, played some nice stuff. Dover goal easily prevented. They've not had much of a sniff when we've made good decisions.

Dover have done a Dartford and attracted a Tommy Robinson fanboy element. They've had issues at other games this season iirc.

Not there unfortunately. But he needs turfing out. Now taking pictures of people at the match and tweeting them with derogatory comments.

I've just read them. He's a horrible shitcunt but like all of his ilk, he's got the rabbit until he's confronted. One of his tweets about a dad and his kid has pissed me off royally

Sorry to hear about such behaviour.

I like to remember the happier times when Dover fans were famous for better things...like singing yer dirty northern bastards away at Woking.

It may well be he was there to see a member of his family play rather than to support Dover. Given one of his comments.

I only saw one solitary Dover fan all match. First 40 minutes were excellent, missed the equaliser but sounded like a bit of a cock up.

Charlie was immense, two or three incredible saves to keep us in it. Surprised Dover didn't press harder for a winner tbh.

Impressed with Powell. Surprised to see players that didn't make the grade with us start for Dover - Higgs, Wanadio and Sterling. And typical that one of them scored.

The equaliser was a basic unforced error that was fully punished when a Higgs shot whistled into the corner of the net from 25 yards. Everything about it was infuriating. Dover had done nothing in attack since the first few minutes, then suddenly forced a brilliant save from Grainger with a header. The ball stayed in play with none of their players near it, panic over. We calmly began playing out from the back, then someone (I think it was Raymond but not sure) passed straight to Higgs under no pressure. More often than not they still wouldn't have scored from that situation. It was similar to his only Hamlet goal at Tonbridge last December.

We'd been dominant until then and a bigger lead wouldn't have flattered us. Dover showed much more urgency after half time and we were lucky not to fall behind, again conceding possession cheaply in dangerous areas on several occasions. There was one hilarious let off when the ball dropped nicely for their centre forward in the middle of the box following a melee. It seemed he only needed to sidefoot it into the gaping net with Grainger off balance and exposed, but instead he rifled a hard low shot straight at a teammate lying in the goalmouth and it somehow looped up and over the bar.

Dover seemed to settle for a point with 20 minutes to go. On a couple of occasions long balls forward went out for a throw near the corner flag and our full backs had all the time in the world to throw to Grainger without anyone pressing to cut off that option. Bringing on Smith and Owusu gave us a second wind in attack but Dover defended in depth and put bodies on the line to keep us out. A point apiece was fair enough on the whole.

Powell was impressive in the first half but faded a bit as Dover became more of a threat. It's asking a lot of such an inexperienced youngster to play as a number ten in this league but he looks more up to speed than some of those who've arrived from bigger clubs' development teams. Comley again appeared to lack the stamina or match fitness to complement his nous and composure in that half back role alongside Raymond. He seems to be very good for parts of games but can't do 90 minutes.

I wouldn't say those ex-players "didn't make the grade for us", even if I wouldn't take them back over what we now have. Higgs was excellent for me last season and was offered a new contract, which he declined. Sterling is a reliable squad player on the left of defence who contributed his fair share of goals and assists, although Wood is an upgrade. Wanadio is just a typical non-league winger who catches the eye at first, but doesn't deliver enough end product.

It was a mistake from Blackman that gave the ball away for the goal. Wood and Holland are big misses t present but it’s been a good December and there is much to build on. I’m sure Porter will be back for New Year’s Day as well. Overall we look a much better team and there is a clear pattern of play.

A happy ending

Not sure if I’m disappointed or relieved that I couldn’t be there today. As I’m sure most Dulwich fans are aware I’ve little intention of hiding who I am but if this person is wandering around taking pictures of minors then they need more than being chucked out they need to be feel a copper’s hand on their collar.

I’m sure he was an individual who regularly trolled the DHFC account in the past - he might even be one of those “football lads” that “threatened” to turn up at one of my games for the women’s/non-binary teams I play for. Unsurprisingly that individual bottled if when it came to the day and looks like he dons that again.

I'm warming to Porter. He seems a slightly edgy and unpredictable character who gets mixed reviews from supporters of his former clubs. Well regarded by Bromley and Maidstone, less so by Dartford and Welling.

At first I thought he looked like a prime candidate for one of those players Gavin gives up on after a couple of months and gets left on the bench for the rest of the season. He's not a dazzling ball player and doesn't appear to have a particular position, yet he's a decent finisher and seems adept at fitting into any forward position in any team formation regardless of who else is or isn't available. I get the feeling he really needs a club where he feels comfortable and it looks like he's thriving with us.

Yes I like Porter. It's that midfield position next to Raymond we need to fill. I actually thought Comley had his best game for us before being substituted. If he gets fully fit he may be the answer. I think Krasniqi is a liability. Both for his temperament and his misplaced passes which twice yesterday gave Dover good attacking opportunities. Also need Holkand back alongside Vint.

I still think Quade Taylor is best in that "number four" role. He looked great playing there aged 17 all those years ago and has always impressed me on the few occasions he's played there since returning.

I think Holland and Wood in the middle of defence would be our best pairing out of our current options and when fit - Vint and Holland are too similar and can get exposed by pace and strength up top. Would love to see Eweka’s loan extended, though. Don’t think we’ve got another defender who can play like he does.

We need a special type of player alongside Raymond if we’re going to get the best out of him. If he’s starved of time on the ball or asked to cover ground defensively he becomes a luxury, but buy him that time and have someone covering the ground alongside him and he’s essential. Maybe Taylor could do that.

Don’t agree with that in my opinion Holland vint. Best c/b at club big strong and both good in the air agree both starved of pace. But do a good job at back
