Dulwich Hamlet v Charlton Athletic XI, Sat 18 July 3pm

He's second or third choice, so he may well have to get used to those fantasies...

It appears to be just me and the bins at the Charlton end in this shot.
That is indeed the case.

Not all....a fair number thought a Country show in Brockwell Park was far more important, even though it was running over the whole weekend...

I mean't the Aveley photos but I know exactly what you mean and share your cynicism.

Actually come to think of it I didn't get in any of the D & R or Charlton ones either but the usual merchants did.

For many supporters attending a pre-season match in July with up to eleven substitutes per side isn't actually that important. Some people have other things to do on Sundays too.

Well over a decade...I was still drinking..which may have 'clouded' my memory! ;)

" I was disappointed with the small crowd and lack of atmosphere though."

Last season the average home Football League Championship attendance was 16,708.

Their home pre-season match against West Ham United, on paper an attractive cross-London derby against a top flight side, attracted 8,678...thus almost TEN THOUSAND and around fifty per cent below their average. (With, I would guess, quite a few hundred away Hammers in that crowd)

By comparison, our average home Ryman League attendance last season was 1,070...with our crowd against Charlton Athletic being 754, a drop of only around 25% on our average home gate.

Meanwhile Maidstone United were the only side in our division with a higher average than ourselves in our division last season, with 1,846.
When they played a Charlton Athletic team this current pre-season the attendance was 528.

These figures put our crowd against a Charlton XI into perspective & it wasn't that small at all, if it's based on statistics....

Congratulations. :)

Makes you wonder why we play in the Kent Senior cup though! :hmm:

Most of the time you don't...it's only in recent years you have chosen to field a team in it. It depends which County FA is your parent county. You MUST play in one county cup, but most professional clubs choose to ignore them, and pay a small fine instead for not entering.
Some clubs can affiliate to a second county. For many years we were also members of the Surrey FA.
One local club, Beckenham Town actually choose to affiliate to three county FA's...and take part in the London, Surrey & Kent county cups!

Don't make the mistake in thinking that I'm like most people on the Dulwich forum and have only been supporting my club for 5 minutes. I'm fully aware of the KSC and when we re-entered it (and won it twice) with our youth team. :p

Good point about the West Ham friendly. God knows why the attendance was so low. I personally couldn't be bothered with watching 2 reserve sides! Funny enough if it was to be played at Upton Park we would've taken 8k+ there, what with our history at that ground and it being the last season before they leave it. I think the Maidstone friendly was midweek?

All the best for the season.

Why dont we compete in the Surrey Senior Cup anymore? Im aware of why we dropped out initially, but surely our finances could cope with this now. I think it seems like a good opportunity for competitive football for the likes of Mascoll et al, especially when the Capital League is imploding unspectacularly. Think it's a shame we dont compete in it given our history in it too.

I don't make any assumptions on how long you've been supporting your club. I am aware that lots of people posting on here have been supporting The Hamlet for less than five years...this is CLEAR from our growth of crowds...and long may it continue.

You do point out that your club XI friendly at Maidstone was midweek. so, by comparison, they had five midweek ordinary ryman League matches, with an average crowd for them of 1,445. So, by comparison, our crowd against you was STILL statistically far better than theirs.

Our crowds continue to grow year by year..whilst yours are approximately down by 1,800 or so on average, compared to a couple of seasons ago...

That is a good question...I think it is certainly something we should look at for the season after the new one.

I've been there loafs of times with Chelsea. Bloody bogey team are Charlton.

It still winds me up that Mourinho refused to acknowledge Charlton's win over Chelsea in the middle of Chelsea's "unbeaten at home" streak. Admittedly, it was by penalties, in one of the cups, but still...

We need to play in the Surrey Senior Cup to protect our 16 times winners record ;)

I think you're absolutely right. Although it's a bit dated (most of our success in the competition came years ago), it's still a remarkable record, one that I think we at least attempt to protect every season.

While we're at it, can we do what Beckenham do and compete in the Kent Senior Cup as well? I know Charlton and Gillingham both put reasonable teams in that each year.
