Dulwich Hamlet FC vs. Hampton & Richmond Borough FC, 30/10/2021

Forecast is a bit soggy today. Their gates aren't huge for home games so should keep numbers down a bit...three games in 7 days will tax the players though as we don't have the biggest squad.

2-2 after 30 mins. Penalty saved just before half time. What is going on?

They are good going forward (have broken well off our corners), but their back 3 are slow both on and off the ball, and we're taking advantage. I'm not 100% sure from my viewpoint that Mills' second was over the line, and I am at that end!

Anyone's game at half time on a lovely day.

Finished 4-3, not sure how we won that as I thought Hampton played some excellent football and calved us open a fair few times.

What are the penalty stats? Have we missed more than scored so far this season? If so then that needs to be addressed.

Julian ((Hampton Goalkeeper) arguably kept Hamtons score down with some fine saves but we made our height advantage count at set pieces, both Holland and Vint scoring headers.

Hampton had a lot more in their tactical arsenal as they could counter attack with ease and in the first half especially knocked it around and inside our box, keeping the ball really well, something we don’t do well.

I was sat in the stands second half and our first substitution (bringing Sterling on, i’m not sure for who) seemed to cause a lot of friction between the bench and the defence who were shouting at each other for their positions.

Eventually Sterling settled on the left of a back four but for about 10 minutes Quade and Blackman were awkwardly out of position and looked unsure of where they should be.

Hampton had a man sent of late for a lunch on Green (I think) and after we took advantage of that extra player and score from a set piece.

All in all i’d say an excellent game for football and an even more excellent result.

Enjoyed that. Big crowd again but wasn’t drinking so no queuing.

Great to hear Rabble behind the goal and Toilets Opposite in full throat today
Really was the passion of the fans from all sides of the ground today that got Hamlet over the line
certainly not anyone's defence on the field
staggering crowd ATTENDANCE: 3,045

Spectators certainly got monies worth, and with hundreds streaming towards East Dulwich pubs and eateries - good news for OUR community

shows how much we need a 5,000 seater stadium

NB (update >>> that in capacity terms 5,000 not actual seats EDC)

An excellently entertaining game against a good side, handing them their first loss in the league since August.

Not sure we've got the right personnel to make the most out of the current formation, particularly at the back - no left-sided centre back in the starting three (we looked better balanced when Sterling came on), Vint still working his way back to fitness, and neither Higgs nor Blackman seemingly comfortable in the wing back role, although I thought Blackman did get into the game more as it wore on.

Also think you need someone a bit more mobile in front of the back three than Timlin - for all his technical qualities I'm not sure he's got the legs for that role these days, and we looked more solid when he was pushed forward and Taylor came out of defence to replace him as the midfield screen. All the shortcomings were exploited for their goals, but all things that can be worked on and improved.

Didn't have a great view of their first one from the edge of the box so don't know how Grainger did for that, but don't think he could be faulted for the other two - did well with everything else, including one great save close in. Their first two goals came from standing off players who were cutting in and letting them get shots off, their third goal from a set piece leaving Blackman seemingly distraught that their big centre back was left to him to deal with.

Further forward, good performances all round - McQueen put in a ridiculous amount of work, getting regularly clattered due to the quality of his touch and control, Green stretched them particularly in the first half, Danny Mills did Danny Mills things, McGregor's set piece delivery was our biggest weapon all afternoon leading to three of the goals. His quality from any dead ball situation around the box is a huge bonus - wonder if it's worth asking the League if we can turn the next penalty we get into a free kick from 20 yards instead.

An obvious highlight seeing Holland on the end of the last minute winner and, my word, Ricky German is a stout lad.

Yes a moral victory against a low calorie McCann team who are in the top half of the table! A big crowd at Champion Hill and and a great day for non league football with Billericay losing to Welling. They will soon be back where they belong!

We won and it’s a result business. The defending today was woeful. We were overloaded constantly. Blackman again nowhere near it IMO. How we conceded the third with Vint Holland Taylor and Mills there and yet there one tall player was marked by Blackman? Decent at set pieces in the attack phase. The penalty thing is now clearly mental and needs addressing. Bizarrely I don’t think we’ve lost a game when we’ve missed. I’m sure Hampton will be fuming with their defensive display. We won so happy days

This is a great squad and coaching team that we have at the moment.
I think all we have to do is practice defending corners and maybe make substitutions earlier and we can be in the playoffs at least no problem.
Fabulous seeing 3,000 crowd.

---------------------------------------------

H&RB fans seem very philosophical about the game on their fan forum - despite losing - as they say could have gone either way
and good to see fans recognising while problems, their club is still doing well this season -

Saturday was one of those great days - which the vast majority of the staggering 3,000 fans (Non-Leagues third highest of the day) who came to Champion Hill enjoyed
H&RB had not lost a game since August and DHFC are back to 6th - yep much still to be done but
maybe just maybe the glass isn't always half empty

Great result yesterday Hampton will be in play offs 2 wins in 3 games not bad Bath city next at home hopefully a win then the following Tuesday nite St Albans. Away.

Been a busy week but what a game. Poor goals to lose - Mills and Higgs won't enjoy watching some of their tackles on the break for the first and second goals. However, we always looked like scoring, and delivered. Bit more resilience and leadership in this year's team. I've often been critical of Gavin's tactics and man management but he has always managed to get some good players on board: Holland is a great leader as well as a solid defender.

The 3-5-2 works for us but we did have a bit of confusion second half when Higgs went off. Allows Quade to stroll out and play from the back - which he is excellent at - but affords him more protection to do so. McGregor is a treat to watch and hope we can hold onto him. If we can't, their number 7 was a cracking player and I'd have him!

Big, but well managed crowd, and the fruit stand is a brilliant idea.

HRBFC might not win the league but I'd pay money to watch them (unlike Maidstone)!

Chatted with Bruce from marvellous greens when he was closing up his shop in honor oak. He said he had a great time and loved seeing so many people eating fruit.
I’m taking a carrier bag next match

Remarkable how short this thread is compared to the Billericay one and its spin-off. I was away so couldnt go but it seems that a decent performance will compensate for a lot of the big crowd struggles.

Great to hear from Gav in the highlights and brave of the interviewer to point out that it's been a long time since he spoke to the fans. Would be great to add a player interview too, perhaps as part of the matchday build up.

Looking forward to the next home game now, as well as the back to back midweek fixtures later in the month.

There were about 400 fewer folk in the ground, which definitely will have helped. Premier League being on perhaps kept a few tourists away, plus we clearly played with a bit more verve and brio than the Billericay game!

The game on Saturday coincides with another international break with unseasonably warm temperatures and sunshine forecast, so expect another bumper crowd and 7 pages of moaning that things arent as good as they were a few years ago when Hamlet were in a league below and the crowd consisted of 300 people and a couple of dogs.

The egg chasing is on though so they’ll all go to Twickers instead.

Why are you belittling genuine concerns from many people on the ability to enjoy a matchday? If the club wants to make £££s from maintaining capacity at 3300+ when service should match, i.e. number of toilets and bar service points. It's not just that though, the ability to see the match is much harder in a ground that doesn't have much raking. Hence it's perfectly reasonable to be asking capacity is capped at a lower number. Nobody has suggest this should be 300 people and 2 dogs.

I'm going on Saturday, looking forward to it, but as Dunc says above, it really is a squash when the numbers get huge and I reckon around a third of the crowd can't see the game properly due to lack of vantage points.

I'm not the tallest so recently have found myself having to choose between standing with mates or standing alone to get a decent view of the game. Which is ok but not great.

Let's see how it goes.
