Dulwich Hamlet FC vs. Eastbourne Borough - 2022/01/25

I noticed that and decided to follow suit, but it’s the only sensible way to date files/folders so that date order is preserved…

CAWYM, which is why I did it

1700 came along last week, will be interesting to see if we beat that tonight.

I'm both looking forward to the match, and having to not miss important goals while stuck in a 20 minute toilet queue.

Its a good barometer of whether we are serious playoff contenders; 6 points out of 9 would be a decent enough return from our 3 game home stand, 3 or 4 points not so much.

I hope its a similar crowd to last Tuesday, that was comfortable. I'm completely put off Saturday home games now being honest.

Eastbourne are a funny side whom we sometimes either struggle against or look dominant against.

Listened on the radio. Sekaja again the difference when he came on, but that sounded like two points dropped. I know everyone can take points off each other in this league but I'm disappointed with that. First fifteen of the second half really cost us there

A point was fair, not a lot to report. We have a lot missing. Sekajja came on and took our only chance of the game. Harness perhaps a bit questionable for the goal, but was a shot from long range that looked to move quite a lot. Looked very light in the middle of the park, but I guess we have no other option at the moment. Not sure what the Timlin injury is, but if he’s out for a while I’d like to hope someone is brought in.

Bit charitable towards Harness maybe. Agree about the rest. Gather Timlin will be a few weeks yet.

Higgs is presumably out for a bit too as well as Timlin. Dayton has struggled to impose himself on games too. Might be time to try Diallo, or bring Quade into midfield and find a centre back. I'm not a fan of Quade in midfield to be honest but could live with it if say we brought Vint back.

What happened to Darren McQueen? He injured too? Him and Timlin just disappeared one week.

Slightly interesting shirt number note - Barnum Bobb started today and wore 12, while 4 (ie Tomlins usual number) was unused.

very frustrating performance tonight
Hamlet should really have been able to put down a fairly average Eastbourne team (no offence intended)
very few good shots on goal
at least we equalised and got a point
we could have easily ended up losing - not that we deserved to as probably shaded it - so guess that's a positive

I think with the list of injuries what we take from games is a bonus at this time. Teams will set out to frustrate and bully in certain areas of the pitch and last night we were missing drive and leadership in the midfield. Even with Mills up top we don't seem to ask enough questions of the opposition when we miss out the midfield and pump it long.

We didn't create enough chances to merit the win so a point a piece was a fair result.

McQueen is injured. Also perhaps depends what shirts fit. Remember last season if Tyrique Hyde and Danny Mills started together Hyde was wearing 20

Afraid it was pretty poor and a draw was probably a fair result. From memory we had the goal and a McGregor free kick and nothing else to even concern the keeper. Im aware we are short with Higgs, Timlin and McQueen all out. But we signed Allisani and Sekaija when at least 1 maybe 2 of them were out. Weve also sent Harris Sealy out on loan. Dayton is nowhere near it in centre mid and that reduces Gios impact as it feels like he has to do more. our delivery into the box last night was poor. looked like a bad keeper error but ill be interested to see the highlights
Sekaija looks a better bet than Kandi imo as his runs seem to be toward goal and in behind whereas Kandi wants the ball to feet more. With the weakened midfield we have no one running past the strikers (well not last night)
2 poor Tuesdays on the trot but with manageable crowds at least i could see the game
Be nice to hear from the club about the injuries etc

A generally poor game and what looked like a bad error from Harness in goal for Eastbourne's goal. The attendances for these midweek games are far more manageable though and feel less claustrophobic. Also, the food queues were much shorter last night too. On to Hungerford on Saturday!

This is it for me - it feels like we're down a lot of players because of the younger names on the bench, but in reality we've got a light, imbalanced squad and the recent recruits haven't necessarily filled a position of need - albeit Sekajja has already shown what he can add, and a fit Allassani should still be a good addition.

McQueen and Timlin in particular have been excellent, Higgs has more than done his part wherever he's been called upon, and Vint made a difference for the games he was in - but unplugging one or two players shouldn't have the impact it has.

Also recognise that the right players aren't always available, and there's been criticism in the past for signing players for the sake of it and upsetting the squad - so hopefully it's a case of waiting for the right opportunities to come up.

On an associated note, but perhaps one for elsewhere on the board - I haven't seen the 12th Man scheme mentioned for a while. Does anyone know if any of the current squad are funded by the scheme, or if there's still the option to use it if needed?

Hi all, Neil here - haven’t posted on Urban for a long time but was alerted to some chat on here about the 12th Man so thought I’d come on and reply.

Firstly, Burty is spot on - the 12th Man was set up as a fan led initiative to help DHFC through some hard times, and has never been run by the club. It was always entirely volunteer led, and has raised in excess of £80,000 for the club over eight years, always to fund specific additional players in times of need. I’ll always think back fondly of signings like Chico Ramos when big Phil got injured in the season‘s run-in, and of course Danny Carr when we had the chance of signing a young striker previously on the books at Reading, but the club couldn’t stretch the budget to meet his wages.

Eight years on from starting the initiative, it’s fair to say the club is in a very different place now and as a result I’m not sure the 12th Man has a place at this current time.

The 12th Man bucket, our most visible fund raiser, used to raise £200-300 on matchdays back in the days of the Ryman League from crowds of less than 1000. These were all pure donations, added to the bucket mostly in small change from fans that had been coming from years and saw the need for extra playing budget. As the crowds grew, donations fell, and in the season pre-COVID we were struggling to raise £100 a game. A few reasons for this in my opinion - firstly, the crowds swelled but not with the sort of people who would hand over money for nothing to help the club. As numbers grew to 2000+ the stand would simply get lost in a swarm of people, and when we occasionally explained to someone what we were doing the standard response would be “why does a non league club getting gates like this expect me to hand over a cash donation?”

We tried to move the focus from the bucket to selling items, like the excellent Unison card wallets, and various books donated by fans. However to be brutally honest there’s only so much you can make from 2nd hand Kevin Keegan biographies and it did give the stand something of a charity shop feel!

The other thing that has changed with the two promotions since we started the scheme is of course the professionalism (or semi-professionalism 😀) of the club. In the Ryman South, a couple of hundred quid and went a long way to helping the playing budget. Without wanting to disclose any numbers, in the National South, um, not so much.

The 12th Man bank account is still there and I will continue to monitor the finances, and I would like to say a big thank you at this point to everyone that still contributes by standing order. I guarantee that every penny raised will continue to be used as it was intended - to help with the playing budget in times of real need. But from the contributors I have spoken to, we generally agree, that time is not now - especially as an offer of help I made to the chairman at the start of the season did not even garner a reply.

Happy to chat if anyone is serious about wanting the scheme to continue this season, but it does seem like some of the comments above have been made without any real understanding of what the 12th Man is or any of the issues we’ve faced in recent seasons.

Apologies for the long post, but hope that has provided some helpful context!

Thanks for name checking Unison re 12th man - obviously others did hard work but Unison did provided about 2,000 season ticket wallets, 5,000 12th man badges and rosettes for big cup games
Unison played a very small part but credit to those who did all the hard work on 12th Man stall - at a time (key times at Tooting) and without witch we wouldn't be where we are - where money raising ideas are somewhat easier - and that's why its still great to see Unison on the shirt sleeve
