do you have any proof that salt and vinegar used to be blue?

For they were, verily (and notwithstanding Roast Beef Monster Munch) the true King Of Crisps.

you bastard! i cannot resist any more and shall now have to go out in search of a packet of roast beef monster munch.

when i was running clubs i had a cash and carry card and every week i would buy and entire box of roast beef monster munch. it took a lot to kick the habit, but thanks to you i can feel the monkey climbing back . Grrrrr

haha, but does noone remember Tudor Crisps which in the 70s you used to get these little metal monster faces called 'Harum Scarums' ?

I can confirm with 100% certainty that the original Smith's crisps had a little blue bag of salt in them and sometimes, if you were really lucky, two or three bags :)

Sadly I can provide no proof :(

Then your post counts for nothing.

Nothing.

nobody remember fuckin' Harum Scarums?

they DEFINATELY existed. but i cant find them on google.

came inside Tudor Crisps in the seventies. In fact, around 1975 as I can remember the clas i was in at school when they came out and how exciting it was seeing my first one.

c'mon ya fucks!! HARUM SCARUMS!!!

Is it just me or is not the case that - as well as everyone else's - Walker's Salt and Vinegar used to be blue? And their Cheese & Onion green? And then they flipped them and have tried to brainwash us that they never did? :(

trust you to come to that conclusion ;):D

I ate many a "canny bag o' Tudor" at that time but always Gammon flavour and I don't remember them. Are you sure "Harum Scarums" aren't just a wee dream you had? :D

I can actually remember Walkers changing from blue to green, was confusing for a bit because I prefer cheese & onion over salt & vinegar any day off the week.

whatever the colour, there is no denying the size of the packets has got BIGGER.

I get annoyed when potato crisps have bloody wheat flour coating on them. If I wanted wheat, I'd buy wheat - they are supposed to be potatoes!

Does anyone else remember Smiths vinegar flavour crisps? No salt just vinegar, and they came in a purple and white packet.]
YES!!! I've been banging on about these for years. Used to be my favourite flavour and then they were no more. I was starting to think I imagined it.

Though in my mind the packet was a very dark blue rather than purple, but I've learned not to trust my memory too much!

Nope - I also remember them.

First result from Google today produces several links:

Also remember the Tudor butterflies that you could get if you saved-up enough packets:

Tudor also did chocolate flavour crisps that were disgusting.

:)

they totally did used to be blue.
From the Walkers Crisps website

(FAQs about Brands & Flavours | Walkers UK)

Question: Why did you change your packaging for Salt and Vinegar and Cheese and Onion so they're in the wrong colours?
Answer: Contrary to popular belief, Walkers Cheese and Onion have always been in blue packets, and Salt and Vinegar have always been in green packets. We don't have a plan to change this, as it's signature to our brand.

Comparison to other countries doesn't really work either, because other countries have their own popular flavourings. You try getting salt 'n' vinegar OR cheese 'n' onion in Spain, for example, Lays or otherwise. It's all paprika or sour cream bollocks.

I mean, what the fuck is this?

It's green, Jim, but not as we know it. Some kind of sweet tomato, garlic and coriander, ffs.

Yup - At least Walkers don't do quite the same product range in the uk:

These are not a patch on proper pork scratchings! Although the red-packeted chilli skins are more tolerable. :D

Isn't the real answer that, prior to some point in the 80s/90s, Walker's crisps were entirely unknown beyond a 30-mile radius from the centre of Leicester?

More or less this IME - I can't remember Walkers much before the big supermarkets supplied from down South really started here - When Asda took-over Fine Fare and Sainsbury/Morrisons started expanding into Scotland at the expense of local co-ops and the like. Before that, it was mainly Smiths, Golden, Wonder and Tudor plus the occasional consignment of Taytos.

One thing I do remember is that when Walkers rebranded Smiths, they ditched the old packaging - Which did have Blue S&V:

And they also had brown "Savoury Vinegar" which was rather nice:
