digital training recommendations

Solidarity against neoliberalism!
Can someone recommend some good basic digital training please - free /paid / college/ webinar or you tubes. I'm still struggling with the 21st century and though I have a newish job working remotely (google stuff on a chromebook) - I'm winging it. My online skills are really patchy.

My boss has offered to sort something out training wise but its low down on his list of priorities. Boss said share me your list of things to need to learn - embarassingly I don't how to 'share' things. 'Just send a screen shot then '- I didnt know how to that either (used to be control apple 3 I think in the 1990s - no fucking idea now.) I cut and pasted my list into into a email, because I know how to do that . My workarounds are taking me much longer. My problem is I don't know how the operating system works, how the whole sharing platform works, what the symbols and menus mean, where to find anything or what everything is fucking called now. Its getting more and more embarrassing.

I was really technical last century - quark illustrator photoshop excel word etc stuff for print basically on apples op then later picked up bits of windows op in a very piecemeal way. Before lockdown I had never used a smart phone, or 'face time' type apps, Have never got to grips with Blue tooth, wifi or the cloud. Only just got to grips with the (...) thing being a menu (when did that start?) and which way to 'swipe' something. Every day through lockdown I've had to learn something new and its exhausting.

this is more in the way of a tip than a training recommendation. for a screenshot - use snipping tool (windows 10 just type snip into the search box at the bottom left hand corner of the screen

it's really really useful, there's so many things you can do with it from doing screengrabs of the whole screen to grabbing quotes out of newspaper articles or photos.

the best thing i ever was told in trade union rep training was about the snipping tool. you'll find a hundred uses for it

This is true - I use the Snipping tool several times a day, every day at work and at home (when on the Windows machine). It is invaluable for training emails etc.

As is the Web Capture feature in Microsoft Edge, if you use Edge. It has a 'Capture full page' option so you can take a piccy of a webpage that is a number of screens long with one click - again - used daily.

I don’t know what Udemy are like but they offer a lot of cheapish courses. I’m doing a few courses on Domestika but they’re very arts and crafts based. Futurelearn are free as well and worth checking out but I’m not sure they’d have what you’re looking for. Udemy seem to have computer courses but as that’s not what I’m looking for I haven’t looked into it.

If it helps.... I reckon most people feel like this to some extent.

I'm self employed and have no "IT support" to turn to, so I have to try and deal with all my computer related stuff myself, and I pretty much have things under control but only just. Quite a large portion of my working time is trying to keep on top of this instead of doing my "actual" job and I have to write myself millions of notes documents to remember how to do various things, like adding things to my website or email settings or backup systems or using various software packages or whatever.

Things being "on the cloud" feels like it adds a whole extra layer of worry about things I don't feel entirely in control of...what is syncing with what and so on.

I also find it quite exhausting at times.

I'd be careful with Udemy - I started some 'beginners programming' course there 'for fun' - Even with my basic knowlege of teaching it was awful.

FutureLearn I've found to be much better.

Id recommend Youtube! loads of useful stuff.. just search for basic tips or tutorials explaining stuff.
no thanks. You tube is full of so much, too much stuff - the good, the bad, the indifferent. Unless someone can recommend something I dont want to bother wasting hours dissappearing down rabbit holes.

Yep, I have it on the taskbar as I use it so often. Dead handy little app.

This stuff fascinates me as it's basically my job but through a different lens.

I started teaching web design on job centre funded courses then switched to doing IT and Creative Media in college.

The digital field is so huge and course learning hours so short I find it interesting to take a peek at what courses focus on.
