On March 31, a fake version of the album was "leaked" on a music blog and spread to various torrent sites as an April Fool's prank with only "I Will Possess Your Heart" correct of all the Narrow Stairs songs named. The rest of the songs were by German indie band Velveteen, but due to the two bands having a very similar sound, some fans weren't sure at first if the files were in fact fake.[7]

Since I downloaded "Narrow Stairs" earlier in the year I've actually been listening to Home Waters by Velveteen and gave Gibbard and co. far too many props. Yep, I was fooled, like a proper idiot.

I just listened to the actual album after downloading it on my brother's computer and I much prefer the Velveteen album. It's pretty much the album Death Cab wish they could make right now. Go home Gibbard, you're done.

I downloaded the fake leak (from Soulseek) and then didn't find out about the subsequent furore until much later. This is probably because I don't pay attention to entertainment media such as websites which review music, fansites for DCFC or the MTV News.
