Cloverfield

sorry to ressurect this thread from the pits of hell..

but

thats where this film belongs

could have been so so much better

if i had paid actual money for it I would be asking for a refund about now. but as it was a dvd a mate lent me I shall just return it to him and not kill him for making me waste over an hour of my life...

I quite enjoyed. The set-up took FAR too long (25% of the running time) for characters you really don't give a fuck about. But it was inventive and quite tense.

hence it could have been much much better

no i like films with fuck all plot and lots of things being blown up. From my previous posts you will now that I have little taste outside of "was it entertaining". but this, whilst in parts OK was a waste of time. I mean wtf with that ending? it was like "shit we have run out of money so cant blow anything up fuck it lets just call it a day and go to the pub"

the party bollocks at the begining just wasted blowing things up time and didnt really introduce to to any of the charcters anyhow. do o give ashit if he shagged her? no.. get with the monster and blowing things up alredy please.

the idea was nice but it failed to deliver

My mum watched this recently. When I asked her what she thought, she said "It was okay, but I would've liked ot know what happened to them at the end." Well done mum, you've completely failed to understand. Again.

I watched this last night and thought it was fantastic!

I had my expectations set very low due to the press reporting that it was Godzilla x Blair With Project.

I was unimpressed with BWP, it was just really underwhelming and not scary.

Cloverfield was in another league altogether. The apparently random hand held shots were beautifully and carefully created and the effect was powerfully transporting.

There was one scene where the city was burning and it was reminiscent of the paintings of Bruegel the Elder, just beautiful and terrible.

I loved the depiction of the monster and the giant psycho shrimp things were suitably scary and disgusting.

I loved the ending too.

I thought it was a very superior horror film and I can't understand why some people didn't like it.

Really glad you enjoyed it Lou!

I saw the thread title and thought: "Oooh, Cloverfield, I loved that film...!"

Click on to discover it was me that started the thread!

I will see if it's on download, if I can get my telly fixed today. Could just do with a monster flick on this wet and windy day.

I didn't like it because I could not connect to the characters so I didn't care about their plight. The CGI monster looked shoddy and whenever they mentioned the reason they were still filming it was all a bit ham fisted.
Nice enough jaunt though armageddon though. Maybe small gripes that ruined what sounded like a great idea on paper.

I liked the idea that it was a trilogy of films that all took place a the same time but from different points of view. I don't know if this is still/was ever the case though.

i watched it on DVD last week, thought I would hate it, but enjoyed it, despite getting annoyed at most of the main characters

I always thought this was a bad remake of 'Monster' which was itself terrible, turns out I was wrong. I should have watched it last night.

2nd watch last night, still don't rate it. All the characters are noo york socialite twats who you want to die and there is not enough footage of the monster destroying the city

Kermode's review is here: I think he gets it pretty spot on, including the strengths and weaknesses.

Personally, I liked the fact that you didn't get to know the characters too well, as it meant the film-makers could bump them off willy-nilly and that added to the randomness for me.

this for me too.

it felt disjointed

I wanted the monster to win because the characters were so fucking spoilt and annoying.

The Village Voice did a great review for the film.

It's on Box Office now for those with Sky.

Ignore the dull characters and just enjoy the SFX and great sound if you have a 5.1 amp.

It's well good.

I thought that was the point. Monster rips up Manhattan, bunch of shallow twats die horrible deaths, bombs fall on Central Park. What's not to love about it?

Rewatched it due to it being in HD but have to agree, spent the whole time rooting for the monster

Pretty bog standard I thought, all cinema of attractions but not that nice to watch with the shaky cam...although it made me wonder, why do we so enjoy seeing the destruction of our urban environments? Because it is fun.

it is the laying waste to the structures of power and control that me and mine have no chance of ever ruling that makes me so happy. I've excused Independence Day cos they blow up the Whitehouse. And as for V is for Vendetta I have re-wound the bombing of Parliament more times than is healthy.

Because humanity has a suicide-streak, always has done. See how we fantasize a thousand fantasies about our own glorious mega-death, playing chicken with fate on screen dreams of monsters and zombies and asteroids and holocausts from alien conquistadors balancing on the dizzy edge of oblivion just to feel that heady thrill. It's probably why we keep all those thousands of nukes around... some sort of sick damaclesian security blanket.

I don't think we really want to die, it's just a cry for help from the drudgery of the day to day grind, maybe.

Just watched it, thought it was pretty good... Though Rob going back for the girl is just ridiculous, as is her rescue...

I watched it at the cinema when it came out and all I can remember is that it gave me a shocking headache, so I don't think I'd bother watching it again on telly.

was just on telly for halloween...
not caring about the characters added the bmovie factor for me (a good thing) - i want to see them die! i hate all that yo bro - hurry up dude shit! eat em up!

enjoyed it a lot - fun rollercoaster - better than war of the worlds

lots of plot holes and inconsistencies but fun nonetheless

same here - we were cheering those spider things on no end!
