Car insurance advice. Damage costs write car off

bellaozzydog

rolling turds in glitter
Anyone know about car insurance strategies when the damage repair costs ++% of car value😂

My neighbour brutally rammed down the side of my car, badly damaging wing and smashing headlight lens

It’s only a run around I bought for 1200 quid. Ball park repairs looking at 900+ VAT

bloody headlight is 400+

neighbour has insurance but doesn’t want to claim but I doubt he’s got the funds for a bag of sand cash

Garage is suggesting it’s a right off and suggested an accident claim company that rights off the car which I buy back at 10% of value and get fixed .. I’m baffled

ultimately it’s a run around and as long as it’s legal I’m not too bothered about some body work crunched but when my van is back online I want to sell it and recoup my Money which won’t happen with a big shit scraped and bent body panel

thoughts please

Car insurance is such bullshit. My car cost me 1000 quid, but the 'official' value is about 300, so any damage costing more than that and my car is written off and I get the princely sum of 300 quid with which to replace it. You simply cannot buy a working car with an MOT for 300 quid anywhere, not in this country anyway, so where do they get these value figures from?

What did you do to provoke this incident?

What Category of write off have they classed it as?

You may be able to buy it back from the insurance company once it's all settled if its repairable, but they may not want to break the contract with their salvage co.

You may also struggle to get insurance for the vehicle again depending on the type of category write off it is, so you'll likely pay a lot more insurance too.

Well, your neighbour needs to make a choice. IME if you get into third parties trying to deal outside of insurance all sorts of arguments and nonsense happens and you'll likely end up going through insurance anyway.

If it was me I would get 1 quote for repairs (don't bother with 3 they can sort that if they wish) and present it to said neighbour as a direct choice between that and insurance. If you get any crap from neighbour just claim through your own insurance and let them deal with it. You can then negotiate with your own insurer to buy back the car.

Auctions mostly. They are predicting what they would get for your car if it went to auction.

Glasses Guide but insurance company always try and get you to settle for the bottom of the range, if it ever happens hum and haw a bit and they will offer you more. Also you can claim for stuff in the car, so if you happen to have a broken stereo that a couple of blows with a claw hammer might make it look like it was accident damaged you could theoretically tell the insurance company you were transporting it at the time.

As for bellaozzydog's problem the Teaboy's solution is the best one.

Should I contact my insurance company...or wait out.
Once you've told them, they're involved even if they end up doing fuck all. Guy in my team back at EAM was going to claim after someone smacked his car in the street but later changed his mind and didn't. His insurance went up next time because he'd told them he was parking it in an unsafe place.

A lot of people 'don't want to go through the insurance'... Until they see the estimate/bill.
Show them the estimate and ask if they want to pay it or go through the insurance. I'll guarantee its the latter.
Then negotiate with your insurance company. Tell them you want to keep the car, and they'll pay you the book value minus the salvage value.

1st choice spares. Why bother with new new parts. Changing a wing and headlight yourself ain't that hard and will take you an hour

Unless it is totally fucked you should be able to buy it back, and you should have no problem insuring it, with normal premiums - claim impact aside.

You won't ever get a payout on it again though, even if you spent a load of money repairing it.

And noone else will buy it off you thereafter, because there is no evidence that it's not massively unsafe.

Get a quote, show it to your neighbour give them a few days to maybe get another quote and decide what they want to do. After four days go through the insurance unless the neighbour has booked it into a garage. I suspect they will prefer to take the hit on their NCB....

I thjj U.K. no he’s getting his mate to source and fit everything
Which I’m happy with fuck the insurance if he can do it for cheap good for him

My Corsa was rear ended with some damage, not that much though. My insurers wrote it off because of the cost of a perfect repair. They paid me its value and I bought it back for a tiny amount, paid for a repair and had to have the car re MOT tested for my insurance to accept me on a fully comp insurance policy again.

The insurance assessor they sent out to evaluate a repair actually recommended this approach. Now I have cash in my account, a normal car with cosmetic damage. Probably wouldn't sell for much but that was the case already.

Chap I know has one of at least two places locally that do bodyshop work - he told me last year that he had finally been paid by one insurance company, something like 18months after he had done the work, which had been massively delayed by the insurance company dicking about in various ways.

Bahnhof Strasse is right, don't get messed around. My question would be why, have they not got insurance?
I tried going down this route once and it took me several recorded letters and appointment of solicitors to resolve. Had the other person fulfilled the cash side of the bargin, I would have sold myself well short from what the solicitors got me in the end.

Buy back from insurers, buy 2nd hand wing and light light from breakers yard - sorted.

i've seen car that are less that 5 years old written off for damage that could be repaired

you have a option to buy it back and fix it yourself for high premiums each year if you wish after a pay off

also never accept the first or second offer from your insurance company

Of course not. The cost of fixing the car and supplying a hire car whilst the damaged one is being fixed will always be substantially more than any increase in premiums. Ergo any cunt wants to do it off insurance is going to fuck you around cos they are the kind of cunt who drives uninsured.

Exactly the reason so many drive around uninsured these days, they refuse to pay the cost of premiums.

Driving uninsured is the definition of anti-social and those that do it are much more likely to be involved in crashes than those who are insured. Driving can be dangerous, removing people who don’t take it seriously is no bad thing.

I’m letting his mate source the parts and put them
on.
It was a temporary motor solution with a long MOT and to be honest it’s already done it’s job, if he puts another panel on and a headlight I’m happy

I’ll drive it to the next MOT (October) see how it fairs.

it’s a lovely car to drive but I’m not exactly a caring and loving owner.

If he doesn’t get it done quick I can always go the insurance route
