Well, time to turn off all news outlets for a fortnight or so. I can't afford to replace a vomit-drenched laptop right now.
Why bother to post then? Just step away from the story.
When people like Captain Tom die and others feel broken up about it, it’s probably because of what he represents. Might make you sick but it’s full of meaning for others,
Unless there are skeletons in his closet we don’t know about, this was a simple good man, doing his best for the greater good. He went to war for probably the best motives, he literally went the extra mile to raise money for the NHS in it’s hour of greatest need.
I don’t personally care, and I’m far from broken up as
Sugar Kane is. But I can feel respect for an elder who has died, and for those who feel moved by his death.
I’ll roll my eyes at the inevtiable outpouring of mawkish sentimentality that’s bound to follow in the next couple of weeks.
I reckon it’s also going to be a kind of holding place or focus point for a lot of the communal and collective grief that’s washing around and improperly expressed right now. So be it.
