Brixton Tube Station; Can somebody fill me in?!

yeah there was. there was a few little shops inside there as well, a place that cut keys and little food place IIRC. The passageway is still there and you can see it sometimes when the builders leave the door open.

no idea if they'll open it up again. in fact, i've no idea whether they will EVER actually finish the station refurb

Originally the shortcut went across Electric Lane and came out on Atlantic Road, opposite the entrance to what I still think of as the BR station.

Stuff about this on the chitter chatter thread, but the answer is no it won't be open.

memespring and I went on a tour of the works (as the noise affects our flat) and were told that it won't be opened up as what were the shops are now to be used as offices due to more space being needed for the controls for the new trains which are being phased in.

We were told the work would be finished by November this year :hmm::D

Was that just the shops they were talking about, or the arcade itself?

Bah!

They should just tunnel upwards from the back of the platforms to a new ticket hall under the mainline station :)

I used the tube for the first time in weeks and was sure the tiles on the platform have gone a yellow colour, or was this just the lighting? I thought I'd got off at the wrong station different station... looked a bit retro compared to some other station refits, and the modern blue lights outside.

Has the 10th anniversary of the refit been and gone, a party would have been nice?

those tiles look like a bloody bargain basement job lot.

I hate them.

And they've been deserted before being finished. apu.

I lived in Brixton for 6 1/2 years and the station still didn't get finished in that time. Shocking really.

 < my shocked face

Has any one ever complained to TFL.........I mean if no body says anything they will just think its fine and it will be another 6 years.

I'm sure if we were City residents or Kensington or Knightsbridge residents it would be a quicker job, but we're not

Thats what I thought, but didn't want to sound a bit snobbish ;) the new tiles at oxford circus, for instance, look very high quality but those looked like the cheapest of cheap b and q specials, and will probably all be chipped and tatty very quickly.

And they're the wrong colour for the Victoria Line, hence my confusion.

They give it the nicotine stained look that tubes used to have when smoking was allowed ;)

I don't mind sounding snobbish in the slightest. And it's not that anyway. Just as you say, we've been fobbed off with tiles that wouldn't be good enough for more salubrious areas. And when they look tatty it will be ''look at those brixtonites. they can't look after anything properly''.

We could always pretend they've been up since the refurb began a couple of centuries ago

How long has the refurb been going on for? I think a party shaming them might be a good idea.

Well I think they constructed The Gherkin faster. Have you never seen Hatboy's letter on it? I think it was Hatboy anyway.

The Strata Tower in Elephant will also probably be completed before Brixton Tube.

Who knows, maybe the whole of Elephant will be redeveloped before the station is finished.

maybe it was dogmatique?

Ah yes, that would have been me. ;)

Missed it in print though, as I was away in Seville at a friend's wedding. Since then, they've bought their first and second homes, had a baby and celebrated it's first birthday.

And the escalator still isn't finished. The straight run up the escalator has been finished, I'll grant you that, Minnie, but the awkward bit - actually keying it in to existing ceilings and panellings hasn't been done - there's still substancial amounts to be done at the top and bottom, hence the chicken wire and expanses of yellow and black warning tape.

The ticket hall is still substancially incomplete, particularly the ceiling and services installed above it.

Oh, not as long as it seems :( Have found this:

"Work began on the refurbishment of Brixton Tube Station in June 2001. Delays occurred to the project due to problems obtaining new power supplies,
changes to the scope of works and the difficulties of working on a very congested site.

Brixton Station is one of the stations that was transferred to Metronet Rail BCV Ltd on the 4th April 2003 under the PPP contract. Metronet has inherited the obligation to complete the works."

have also found this:

"The refurbishment of the tube station include the installation of two lifts and an escalator to improve passenger access to the platforms, as well as demolition and re-building of the existing station building, incorporating the remodelling of the entrance façade and provision of retail units.

Metronet have confirmed that the works are due for completion within the next 12 months.

Metronet have also indicated that they are confident that the works will be sufficiently advanced by November 2003 to enable the removal of the majority of scaffolding and hoardings before Christmas
."

Excellent, so basically it#s just had its eighth birthday. if they look like finishing before 2011 we'll have to throw a Happy Ninth Birthday Brixton Tube Refurb aprty.

and then this set it back in 2003

Brixton Tube - closure possible ...
Don't shoot the messenger!

Story from today's SLP

Asbestos threat to Tube service

By Vicky Wilks, South London Press

BRIXTON Tube could be shut down for weeks after asbestos was discovered in its roof.

The busy station, relied upon by thousands of South Londoners, could be out of action if the decision is taken to close it down to passengers.

The discovery of the potentially harmful substance at the Victoria Line station was made by workmen as they fitted cabling for a new escalator to replace existing stairs.

A London Underground spokes-woman confirmed it could mean the closure of the Tube, although she could not say for how long.

She said: "Minute traces of asbestos have been discovered in the station roof, where they were looking at putting the cabling to power the escalators.

"It has not been disturbed and in this state it is safe - there is absolutely no safety risk to either customers or staff.

"However, we need to remove the asbestos so work can continue safely in putting the cables in to get the escalators up and running.

"The asbestos needs to be cleared so work can continue and it is far too early to tell if we will need to close the station but we will do our best to keep the station open and provide a full customer service."

She added: "It is constantly monitored by London Underground's own asbestos team."

The closure of the station would be a nightmare scenario for South London, where a shortage of Tube stops means places like Brixton, Balham and Stockwell are besieged by commuters every day, leading to overcrowding.

The co-ordinator of Lambeth Transport Campaign, John Stewart, said: "The closure would be a disaster for South London because Brixton is still one of the busiest Tube stations outside central London.

"It would make people's journeys difficult to impossible. The whole area would be a nightmare."

As we went to press, London Underground could not give any dates for the possible closure but they may be announced later this week.

Compare and contrast
On 23 July, I posted in this earlier thread

Quote:
Looking at the new Ken-controlled tube website for an update on today's Victoria Line delays, I spotted a link to the Tubefuture interactive webmap on what will be delivered by the (in)famous PPP contractors.

Clicking on Brixton brings up

"by end of 2004 we will have completed the congestion relief project in the station and installed an additional escalator and 2 MIP lifts" [MIP = mobility impaired persons???]
Revisiting the same site today, and clicking on Brixton tells us:

By 2007 we will have modernised the station

By 2007 we will have Introduced Station Accesibility Projects
By 2007 we will have Modernised lifts
By 2007 we will have Modernised escalators

Not exactly encouraging, although I suspect that almost all individual target dates earlier than 2005, not just those relating to Brixton, have now been removed from the site so that there can be no claims of broken promises before Ken's re-election campaign

Aux armes citoyens
Formez vos bataillons
Marchons, marchons
Qu'un sang impur
Abreuve nos sillons

Edited to add - I realise that "And drench our fields with their tainted blood" might be going it a bit strong against London Underground/TfL/Ken - any suggestions for an alternative that goes in time with the Marseillaise?
