Brixton Splash

but according to that website it's on 3rd August this year. Looks like they're not promoting very well again.

It's actually on Sunday, but this year's party doesn't seem to be enjoying as much support (or publicity) as last year and I heard that some local traders aren't feeling the love.

The whole thing seems to have gone off at half cock too: the fact that the half-arsed website is still saying that "an update is in progress" with just a few days to go isn't exactly encouraging and WTF are the 'profiles' all about?

And here's the first six entries in the unexplained 'music' section:

new test - firefox
safari - new test
ie7 - new test
test
test - ff mac
another test - firefox

I'm really not too keen on the event's "from infamous to famous" strapline, you know, and the whole thing seems to be going off at half-cock this year. Most people don't even know it's on.

what an odd website......

I am delighted to note that, unlike last year, there wont be a sound system outside my living room. I got a terrible headache last splash........

The latin carnival is on the same day in Burguess park, so I think I'll be heading that way on Sunday :)

Just checked out the Brixton Splash website - it does look totally random, like they've built it using a generic template meant for a social networking site.

Either way, it had some info on there about the music and excited to see that Vibes FM merchants Main Squeeze are playing on CHL - should be good for all you reggae fans out there.

What's with the weird SLP love in? I know the paper is a sponsor, but every week there seems to be a 'how becoming a Splash steward changed my life' story - seriously!

I've been for the past years. Quite enjoyed it, if nothing else then the car free zone around central Brixton. But I reckon the event lacks a purpose, or even a message.

Loud dub in Brixton.

...yeah, and so what? You get that for 364 other days of the year.

What about celebrating youth in the area? It would tie in perfectly with the current gun stories that you read about in... the SLP.

Agree that the website is shocking.

Shame they've underpromoted it so badly. Strangely enough some of their initial promotional stuff seemed surprisingly professional and welcoming in the beginning, but there's been precious little since.

Can't really be arsed with the local politicking, but something's not quite right here.

I hate to say this, but I've had a constant, nagging feeling of impending doom for this event.

I sincerely hope I'm completely wrong.

I saw a poster for it in The Prince. That'll draw the crowds, for sure.

Anyway, there'll be loads of people there. You don't need to publicise for the centre of Brixton too much, if it's any good, people will be there.

It's a bit worrying when urban75 comes up 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th for the event in Google!

I hope it's a great success, but it's a shame that there doesn't seem so much of a buzz about it this year.

nothing to say but just writing this so it leapfrogs the old thread that i spent ages reading

^^^What he said ^^^

Just got lost in the last two pages of the previous thread thanks to a certain other poster's bloody-mindedness :)mad: at Bob)

Check out the SLP guide today. The front page of the pull-out has words from Terry Eagle, the "McDonald's Franchisee."

"I am delighted that McDonald's can contribute to Brixton Splash through our Hospitality Training Programme."

More similar guff on p2, p3, p4, p5, p6, p7, p8 etc.

One of the things I thought Splash had going for it was the genuine independent and local spirit that can be found in Brixton. Get some tossers like McDonald's on board and the event just becomes another bland corporate arse-licker.

How the fuck does that work?

Perhaps Mc Donalds send some 18 year old out with a dustpan and brush to clean up under the auspices of their McManagement Training Programme?

To be fair, if McDonalds are throwing in cash to give Brixton a little free party I'm not that bothered, unless there's shitloads of overt branding and a Rondal McD as MC or something.* I'm guessing they funded that silly programme by appealing for sponsors at a local level rather than an appeal to corporate bigwigs. Bung us a little money, we'll get this printed and we'll give you a mention.

Be nice if they could have avoided the controversy by choosing less obvious targets mind.

*What's the betting that Levi Roots sings a 9minutes long advertisement for his sodding sauce (and new brand extensions) once again btw?

My son came through a minute or so ago (CHL) very poorly attended and he said attendees vastly outnumbered by police. Maybe Windrush square is better.

Gergl and zora have both phoned me to tell me that there are some seriously good noises coming out of some lovely stacks down there and that i should get dressed and get high and go bob my head in front of a bass bin.

not sure i can be arsed though.

I didnt know it was on.The streets blocked off. There are a few Sound systems. But not much else.Probably kick off later tonight when a lot of people turn up for the music just before it closes.

To be honest id have preferred it on Saturday.Like it was before.Brixotn never was that busy on Sundays.
