Brixton riot 30 years on: Windrush Square/library event, Sun 10th April 2011

Hi..Researching Brixton 81. Does anyone have newspaper clippings from April 1981. I would be interested in the nationals esp Sun, Guardian but also local papers as well. Thanks.
Visit the National Newspaper Library in Colindale - it's all on microfiche. It's great fun doing research there. :)

To mark the 30th anniversary of the 1981 Brixton Uprising there will be a special event held at Windrush Square and Brixton Tate library on Sunday 10th April, 2011. Here’s the press release:

Loads of old video footage of the riot here: http://www.urban75.org/blog/brixton-riot-30-years-on-windrush-square-event-sun-10th-april-2011/

Hi all, I hope this finds you well!

This is a call for participation and help --

I am hoping to talk to people who have participated in different events, moments, written texts, performances, that look back to Brixton 1981. Specifically - there was discussion in 2006, and also this event in 2011. I was in the library for the event in April 2011, and I am looking for others who were present.

I'm a sociology PhD student at Goldsmiths, doing a research project on the different ways in which Brixton 1981 has been invoked over the years.

I am also interested in talking to people who didn't attend these events, as I am very interested in the perspectives of people who have been in the area over the years since then, so I am hoping that people involved in this thread would be up for participating in the project!

I'll be putting flyers up in the library about it too. If you know others who went and would be up for talking to me, that would be great as well.

thanks!
Miranda

I was in Brixton when first riot happened.

I did talk to someone doing a history project on the 81 riot a some time ago.

Invoke is a strong word.

The most recent times it has come up is the recent riots and the campaign to save the Rec.

After the recent riots some were contrasting the 81 riot as being justified to the supposed lawless recent riots. Not something I agreed with.

When the Rec was under threat some in the Afro Caribbean community were upset that that Rec may be demolished. As they saw its funding to get built as due to the 81 riots making the politicians sit up and see things had to be improved. This was interesting invocation of the 81 riots. Whether that is what actually happened is another matter.

Do they only fund Phds about Brixton if the word riots of 1981 are mentioned?
I might be able to find some time to talk to you dodeckahedron
boohoo Great, I'll message you ... That's partly what I'm interested in ...

Pickman's model yeah the reading room there is great! I am looking at how the coverage has changed over time. I'd love to find out who made the exhibition of old press cuttings that was at the library in April 2011, does anyone know who made it?

I put my whole name so that I could be found by people interested, but I've edited it out now.

Thanks, it'd be really interesting to find out more about the Rec. I will get in touch with you!

Also about 2011 - part of the project is looking at how August 2011 was compared to Brixton 81 in different places, the different perspectives, and where this urge for comparison comes from - why 81 and not 85 or 95. It is interesting to see how the mainstream media and state has changed its perspective on 81 over time.

I'm also interested in how references to sus and Operation Swamp are invoked in contemporary anti-stop and search action.
