Brixton Doctors

I'm looking to change mine. At the moment I use the Brighton Terrace Practice and while the doctors are fine, it's so busy that you can't get through on the phones half the time and it's a minimum 2 week wait for an appointment (are all surgeries like this?).

Anyway I live on Brixton Hill so I'd prefer something up here as I have a baby. Any recommendations?

I'm about to change too - I won't change to Brixton Hill Surgery, merely 'cos there's one closer - but I have a friend (in his late 80s) who has been there most of his life - really rates it and has given me intricate details on all the doctors - who to see and who not to see... :D

Brixton Hill Group Practice is good and it's open all day 5 days a week at proper times, and well run and organised.

My two doctors have gone. :(

Would appreciate insider knowledge of the rest though.;)

My surgery is great, but the wrong end of Brixton to you. I've heard nothing but bad things about Brighton Terrace, tbh, and you should definitely be able to get an appointment within 48 hours (isn't that the govt target?).

They also do a "late night" one evening a week, it's very helpful for people that work but don't want to take time off because they aren't actually sick - for things like repeat prescriptions etc.

That's good, however they have gone down in my estimation since they stopped doing travel jabs and blood tests. :(

Stockwell Group Practice do travel jabs, blood tests and have 2 evening sessions and a nurse evening session.

They have a physio and osteopath and probably other stuff that I'm not aware of.

They no longer do free yoga classes on Mondays though.

Never usually have problems getting through on the phone. They have an online repeat prescription service.

Been going there about 15 years now, only 1 doctor was useless and pissed me off once but I think he left years ago. The rest are pretty good. You can take pot luck or specify which one you want to see.

Stockwell Group Practice are excellent, the best of the 3 surgeries I have been to in this area - but they take people form a particular catchment area and Brixton Hill probably isn't in it. They offer a great reception service, kind and attentive Drs, lots of additional services, good premises.

I'm assuming that you need an SW9 postcode to join Stockwell Group Practice.

Proper Brixtonians can join the BRIXTON Hill group practice if they have a SW2 postcode iirc. Once I briefly lived on the edge of Poets Poncing Corner and on the boundary of SE24 and they tried to make me change.

Not sure that that assumption is correct any more, they were supposed to scrap catchment areas last year. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/2224458/GP-catchment-areas-to-end-under-NHS-plans.html

The nhs doctor finder thingy lists Stockwell Group Practice when you enter SW2 and the 'catchment area' bit is empty on their web page. http://www.nhs.uk/Pages/HomePage.aspx

Probably best to ring and find out. http://www.nhs.uk/ServiceDirectorie...EBD9958-C0FF-42C3-8CF1-ACB8F72B05B9&TopicId=2 (Their page doesn't show evening surgery times yet)

Its just past the skateboard park behind the Brixton Academy in case anyone is wondering.

I'm not sure about the catchment thing either - I don't think it's as simple as being based on postcodes. I moved quite far away from my previous doctors. Whilst I remained in an SW2 postcode, my original address was one road away from the surgery whereas now I'm really on the cusp of their catchment area. They are actually SW4 and still see me.

Thanks, I'll check out the Brixton Hill practice as def want a closer one if I change. Brighton Terrace is OK. They don't do blood tests, doubt they do travel jabs but I quite like my grumpy old doctor - he has heart really.

Usually the Brixton Hill Practice refer you to the new health centre in Streatham.

Whenever I need blood tests done, I usually go to St Thomas', although they'll refer you to Guys or Kings too.

More often that not though, Dulwich, which is ok as it's relatively empty but it's a pain in the arse to get to.

They stopped referring to King's ages ago because it's too busy

I stopped going to Kings because it was crap. They managed to lose blood test samples from me twice, and I don't trust them any more. I don't like anything involving needles at the best of times, and repeated unnecessary blood tests are not part of my schedule.

I always go to Dulwich to have my bloods done. They haven't lost one yet, in 14 years of bi-annual (at least) blood tests, and the longest wait (with a crowded waiting room) was about 40-45 mins.

For blood tests, or travel jabs?

Not sure they offer free travel jabs. What you have to do is nab the doctor as soon as they say you need a blood test and tell them which hospital you'd prefer, because the minute they write out the form and you leave the surgery, you're buggered - unless you don't mind going to Dulwich, but if Streatham's nearer, for you, tell them you'd prefer to go there.

I'm with Brixton Hill Group practice. Appointments are usually quickly available, and although you don't always see the same doctor, I've no complaints about the level of treatment or expertise.

For customers of this practice there is also the added bonus of the waiting room experience. Every square inch of wall space is plastered with home-made block capital passive-aggressive warnings, orders, threats and instructions. It's kind of interesting to ponder how much the reception staff must hate their clients, and appreciate how hard they have worked to make the waiting room the most oppressive and customer-hostile room in London.

I'd be interested in a PM if anyone knows what happened to his brother...

You are joking aren't you? It's an absolute pleasure to sit in there compared to my b/f's doctor's surgery and at least you can now book yourself in for your appointment on the touchscreen, unlike b/f's place where you have to repeat your name half a dozen times before they understand you and is absolutely, diabolically, shambolically run :mad::mad:

Now that you mention it, although I've never seen the brother, I haven't seen him in the waiting room at all. Has he gone then? There's a nice woman doctor there now who I've seen a couple of times.

All doctors surgeries are like this surely. The Brighton Terrace surgery's waiting room is so awful I requested somewhere else to sit so I could breastfeed my baby as he was upset and had to go for a check-up. Nowhere else was available.

A couple of years ago I phoned up for an appointment and was told he wasn't available. On sabbatical. Then he said something about not having to tell me/me being able to guess what that was about...

I always used to go to him when I wanted good bedside manner. grumps doesn't have it so much. I'm not sure how the practice manager was expecting me to magically know what it was about but he did used to greet me with ''hello sexy'' so I'm wondering if there was some impropriety with a patient.

/selacious gossip]

does anyone know if the brighton terrace surgery does travel jabs or can I go to the new streatham drop in place?
