Boxee, Apple TV, Xbox Media Center, etc: your suggestions on media networking your house/flat?

Its alright, I've just read that netgear readynas can run a plex media server add on, it also has a bit torrent and NZB add on.

Im gonna save up for one of those i think then.

"just use handbrake" isn't a mass-market solution. itunes won't play people's existing pirated movies. It will play their pirated music.

how do you have your mac set up for wake on network access btw?

I use Rip It which creates copies for pretty much all formats I need including iTunes' various devices...it works as simply as iTunes does with CDs.

I thought you ran a tech website too?

Seas0npass is an application where you plug you atv into you mac, press 2 buttons on the remote and it jailbreaks it for you.

the command line stuff is just a case of copy and pasting from the wiki (thats the ctrl + v and the ctrl + p button combo :p)
I've had no luck trying to jailbreak it from a pc.

What i would like is a box I can stream stuff from my pc to that plays it on the tv, any ideas?

again ps3 media server does the job... really I don't get why if you've got a pc and a tv why you'd use anything else let alone spend money on summit.

It connects to all major tvs with DLNA and all 3 games consoles...

Or you/know you could spend more cash on something that does the job as well...

not better just as well.

It supports all file formats has built in transcoders runs mpeg, mp4, mp3, jpg, raw, CR2, AVI, WMV, Dix, xdiv, xvid, MKV and it's free....

seriously. why chose anything else (unless you have a weak as ras wifi network on a or b in which case buy an upgrade to your router...)

I don't have a ps3 and I don't want to leave my laptop plugged into the tv - I want to stream from the laptop to the tv.

A few do, but not all.

Seeing as his ps3 would connect to DLNA though just stick with that.

How many TVs have DLNA enabled these day then?
most of them, all the sony ones, samsung too, toshiba and LG... so if you're buying a HDTV/3D then it's a feature worth having...

What with the I-TV being the inthing at the moment most modern sets (last 5 years or so) have some level of DLNA enablled option on them...

The point being that you don't need a console if yours is DLNA enabled you can use a media server directly from your PC and if it's not then you will need an intermediary box.

Frankly I'm fucking sorry I spoke go ahead spend money you don't need to on superfluous extras when there free easy to use PC/Mac software out there like I give two shits...

Fuck offering any of you cock wits further advice...

fuck the lot of yahs and the horse you rode in on...

Tversity worked well with my old xbox using the wireless connection, though I cant seem to get it set up on my new xbox. Plays all formats and can get online flash as well in the premuim version.

why bother yetman they don't want free versions or premium software they want the conspicuous consumption of new gadgets fuck em... no nothing cunts...

Ok. I've got an Xbox, and a Nas. What do i have to do to rip my DVDs to the nas and play them back through the Xbox & TV without having to have my windows PC on?

Xbox 360? Can't be done. You need a PC running media player 11/12 or a mac running Connect360.

Can you stop being so rude please?
rude as in dismissing simple information given on free easy to use alternatives to oversized, expensive lifestyle gadgets with a sneery yeah how many people have a DNLA tv (all flats screens) or not fecking reading when someone has set the criteria and caveat to their comment, answer the question on the topic you mean..

Still if you're finding it offensive then it must have been you I was talking about innit, otherwise why would you find it offensive if it clearly wasn't aimed at you specifically...

I don't think unless you are the daily mail you can actually take offense on behalf of others...

Rude as in throwing around a string of needlessly abusive comments in a thread about media centres. There's no need for such aggressive language.

Nas will work with a xbox 360 as long as there's a uPNP client running on it. I'm not sure whether the nas has to be formatted in fat32 as that's what xbox likes though.

Garf the reason some people might want to buy something instead of using a dnla enabled thing is that manufacturers are still not providing a full suite of codecs in the hardware. I tried using DLNA on my blu ray player, but about 50% of my vids were unsupported and it struggle to stream hd content decently.

There's no point in being pissy if people don't listen to you, DLNA Is flawed, not by the protocol but by the half arsed attempts at comparability companies offer you with their products.

Also has codecs improve they won't get implemented in your tv/blu ray hardware, essentially rendering it useless unless you can install codecs yourself, which is exactly why people would opt for a more expensive solution.

I hope your not an A/V technician for crissakes

I've got a laptop with hdmi out. Plugs into both TV's in the house and does anything you'd want it to

Although for most files I download my main telly can play them straight off my network or hard drive.

DNLA is flawed, the fact remains nearly all other than the budget tellys from asda and tesco do DNLA at some level they don't need to do it to a high level just have it enabled and a piece of software on your pc or mac or nas can do the transcoding for you where you almost certainly have the relevant codecs or have a way to update/upgrade them.

all you need is the handshake one machine to be able to see the other. The rest is done within the software.

Sure if you're using DNLA enabled machines to talk directly to the files then yes the lack of standardisation of DNLA is a problem but not if you're using a media server program. That's the point.

And hell for free why wouldn't you try it for the sake of an install see if it works...

I wonder if there's any other field of knowledge in the world where someone who knows feck all about it would attempt to counter with some irrelevant nonsense rather than attempting what was being advised other than IT...

betcha you don't do into a VW dealer and say the problem with my petrol passatt is like the one with the kenwood food master I had in the 80's because these things aren't standardised you know bugger all about cars...

Your last paragraph doesn't make any sense.

Yes you can get transcoding DLNA servers, an I tried to use it on a blu ray rip, it failed miserably and stuttered to hell. The user interface for films on both my xbox and blu ray is horrid, and I've still not come across a server or client that can make use of soft subs.

DLNA servers really aren't what they're cracked up to be.

No idea why your getting so wound up about all this
