Berlin in January ideas please

1927

Funnier than he thinks he is.
Off to Berlin in 15th January with Germany mad 7 year old and my girlfriend.

Any ideas on unmissable, missable and anything else I should know. Thanks!

If he has any liking for tech and engineering, the Technology museum is a must for any youngster - I know I'd have loved it at that age and it was still great in August when I finally went there.

Deutsches Technikmuseum - Home

Its a huge collection, so a bit of pre-planning might help you narrow down the best bits to visit as you cannot do it justice in a whole day. The planes/rockets, trains and autos sections are jawdropping - Never mind the rest!

The area around Eberswalde Strasse U-Bahn station (Prenzlauer Berg?) is a colourful area full of cool/quirky places - music/shopping etc and it is a short walk from one of the main stretches of the Mauerpark/sporty places.

Most touristy/expensive part is I suppose from the Brandenburg Gate down to Alexanderplatz and around Potsdamer Platz but are all worth it for the walk alone and there are plenty covered spaces if it gets too cold. So much history in such a short distance!

The Zoo is an absolute must:

Zoo Berlin - A Very Warm Welcome to Zoo Berlin.

I'm no great fan of zoos in general but I was completely enthralled by the place - its another all-dayer!. You also get a very good view of several of the monkey enclosures for free from the upper deck of the Bikini centre, which is not too obviously accessed by steps-up opposite the Europa Centre/Kaiser Wilhelm Church. The shops in the Bikini centre itself are at the toe-curling end of the price range though. Plenty cheaper competition nearby.

This is a useful site for ideas/places:

Slow Travel Berlin

Have fun! :)

Go Buddy Bear hunting. Have your photo taken with as many as you can find.

Buddy Bears - Start

I only managed 8 but was on a stag do and so didn't really have the time.
He likes that sort of thing, having done Gromits in Bristol!

Unfortunately there's no football on as they are in winter break, a trip to the Olympic stadium would have been awesome.

Been advised to do the to tower, but not to eat up there!

The tower is good. There are better places to eat but its not awful.

Panorama Punkt in Potsdamer Platz is taller than the Fernsehturm, cheaper, has far shorter queues, doesn't spin, and you can eat or drink in the cafe there too. And it's got one of the buddy bears!:)

BTW aquarium lift and buddy bears seconded.

Maybe these photos from my trip might give you some ideas...

Visit the Reichstag/Bundestag. It's free but you have to pre-book (for security purposes).

You go around the dome with an audio guide, pointing out all the stuff as you walk, plus the roof is open.

The Park Inn on Alexanderplatz has a viewing platform on the outside of the building. It blows a gale but is higher than the tower. I think you have to pay to go up it. Bonus though is that there used to be a buddy bear in the foyer.

Disclaimer: Its a long time since i've been so things may have changed.

The Stadium itself is open 10-4 in Winter. Guided tours or you go-round yourself. I didn't go this time but have been before and it is another one where there is so much to see that it can take a lot longer than you might anticipate.

Olympiastadion on the U-Bahn is the way to get there if you want the grand ceremonial approach through the pylons/parade platz. The S-Bahn station is slightly nearer but it spits you out at the side of the stadium.

And if you want a bit of fine socialist architecture to contrast the stadium with with, yes that big bulky tower block by the S-Bahn is actually a le Corbusier Unite!

Thanks.

Trivia time. I was born on the day that Le Corbisier died!

The Film and TV museum in the Sony Centre on Potsdamer Platz. Loads of Marlene Dietrich stuff, as well as really interesting things from the history of cinema - German cinema and worldwide cinema.

Loving the place. Not as cold as expected. Can't believe how cheap everything is!
It helps that the pound's pretty strong against the euro at the moment - glad it's milder than you expected.

BTW (ViolentPanda wants me to ask this) have you been to a supermarket to check out the price of a bottle of beer yet?

There's a shopping centre in Alexanderplatz has a pretty good viewing platform on the top floor , indoors too. And there's never been a big crowd or anything any time I've been there .

The boat tours are pretty good too . Well cheap but I'm not sure if they operate during winter .

I was there before NYE and it was 14 degrees !! Usually minus ten that time of year .

One pub we went into in a housing district charged us 6 euro for 4 beers . Must have been a happy hour or something. Had a really good mixed grill in a nice restaurant on NYE itself, 6 and a half euro . Flipping nothing .

Park Inn and Galleria Kaufhof at Alex both have viewing platforms, although if 1927 takes Idris2002 's advice and visits the Sony Center, he'll also be less than a hundred metres from the Panorama Punkt 360 degree viewing platform, which is about twice as high up as the Park Inn's platform, and has a handy restaurant, too.

I almost made someone weep, telling them how much (or rather, how little) the local offie on Beusselstrasse in Moabit was charging for a bottle of The Tyrconnell.

We were buying beer in a local corner shop for 60cents for 0.5l, Warsteiner or other decent stuff was €1.4.
