Baseline Personnel Security Clearance & Bankruptcy

Ranbay

The same rules apply
Anyone know if a almost 4 year on Bankruptcy will effect someone getting a job with the government?

partner has been offered a job and is going through clearance now... but she went bankrupt in Feb 2019

Safe

CTC and Basic checks ( is it still called BC?) should be fine. Most people in goverment just have these. After all, both give occasional controlled access to Secret material- which lots of people forget or didn’t know- and is more than most people need.( even lots of people with SC…)

Probably be something they ask about at SC and Will deffo come up at DV. The issue will be vulnerability to corruption rather than the bankruptcy itself -somewhat ironically given the last three years of government…

BC - used to be basic check. Name address and criminal record but most offences aren’t a problem.

CTC - counter terrorist check- as above plus a bit more on the CT side, it’s more about access to certain buildings than material.

SC - Security Check . Regular access to Secret some access to Top Secret. Normally a very long form, occasionally an interview. Takes months…

DV developed vetting . Long form plus a meeting with a lovely retired copper who looks like your grandad/ grandma and asks you what kind of porn you like…

ETA apparently BC is now AC - accreditation check - every day’s a school day. More info here

Thanks, she's going to give the agency the heads up this AM, hope it doesn't matter as the job is perfect for her :(

Will probably be fine. If it’s an agency will be unlikely to be SC or DV as normally they stick to people who already have them. Fingers crossed for her.

There are some caveats - like if you've been done for fraud you're unlikely to get a job in the Treasury or SFO, or if you're ex-SVR you're probably wasting your time applying for the Security Service - but overwhelmingly it's about about your honesty. If you declare it, you'll almost certainly be fine - if you don't, they'll ping you as a teller of porky pies and your application with go in the round file...

Nothing you declare - caveats etc.. will be as career halting as anything you try to hide.

TBF, if you're still SVR or FSB, the Security Service will happily employ you. It's tradition!

My understanding is that they look for anything that can be used as leverage against someone.
They used to ask if you were gay. If you said yes and the confirmation checks with friends and family said yes well then you were openly gay and not open to blackmail. But if your family said no he's straight... Well that's a blackmail opportunity.

Bankrupt due to business failure fine. Due to gambling debts not so much. Gambling addiction is a potential lever to compromise someone.

As everyone else said be totally upfront honest. A lie (or deliberate ommision) will close the door for good.
